Those of you who freaked out after I reviewed The Long Emergency by James Howard Kunstler, the scenario of how our civilization will collapse, won’t find any solace in the DVD documentary COLLAPSE. Chris Smith, the director of American Movie and The Yes Men, films former LA cop turned rogue reporter, Michael Ruppert, as he predicts how our oil economy will fail, how our banking system will implode, and how we all need to get into “survival mode.” These are not the ramblings of some backwoods survivalist. Ruppert backs up his assertions with data. COLLAPSE is not for the faint-of-heart. I was on the edge of my seat while viewing this gripping monologue. GRADE: A
It’s hard for me to even read your review of it.
Forewarned is forearmed, Patti. COLLAPSE is like the canary in the mine shaft warning of danger. I added some video to reinforce my review.
While I agree it sounds dire, I’m always a little leery of end-times prophets of doom–and that includes Kunstler, a writer I enjoy. One thing that doomsayers never take into consideration is human enterprise and ingenuity. I’m not saying it’s all going to be sunshine and roses and I’m not saying that the way we live won’t shift dramatically or that many people will not be damaged or die, but there have been dramatic shifts before and people have, for the most part, adjusted and moved on. I think it’s just part of the human spirit of survival–and I’m no Pollyanna.
I’m no Pollyanna, either, Deb. COLLAPSE is the “worst-case scenario” with oil going to $200 a barrel and our banking system melting down. Like you, I’m hoping human ingenity and human enterprise (or maybe WATSON) can save us from disaster.
Well, the doomsayers are always with us. I just wish the Power That Are wouldn’t keep giving them encouragement and so much solid evidence (and abuse) to work with…I’ve OVERLOOKED this one, thanks…
I found COLLAPSE compelling, Todd. Sure, the doomsayers tend to deliver extreme predictions, but Something Isn’t Right in our economy right now.
Is this somehow connected to the “End of America” video being hyped on the radio by Stansberry Research?
I’m sure COLLAPSE and “End of America” are working the same side of the street, Evan. The danger is real and COLLAPSE captures the arc of decline better than anything else I’ve seen. Your public library might have a copy.
