Colm Toibin wrote a novel about Henry James after studying his work for years. Colm Toibin on Henry James collects a dozen essays and introductions about Henry James where Toibin analyzes many of James’ classic works. My favorite essay in this volume is “Henry James’s New York.” New York played a big role in several James stories and novels. When putting together what he considered his finest work, James called it “The New York Edition.” If you’re interested in reading intelligent criticism of Henry James, you’ll find Colm Toibin on Henry James fits the bill. GRADE: B+
If you haven’t already read it, I strongly recommend Colm Toibin’s novel about Henry James, THE MASTER. What I liked so much about it was how Toibin showed that very small seeds, planted years or decades before, became the roots for much of James’s output. Also, he mentions that James used a dictaphone for the last years of his life. I’d love to find some of those dictaphone cylanders and hear “the master’s” voice with my own ears.
Yes, I have read THE MASTER and I agree with you, Deb. It’s a marvelous performance. I also liked David Lodge’s Henry James novel, AUTHOR, AUTHOR. It would be interesting to hear Henry James’ voice on that dictaphone, too.
going off topic, the Bills are ahead of the Raiders just now. Hope you have a pleasant trip home and a chance to relax a little before you get back to the grind. Looking forward to your B’con report(s).
Guys on the plane in Chicago had the Raiders vs. Bills game on their smartphones, Rick. The pilot was threatening to take the plane back to the gate if they didn’t turn them off. Finally, the Bills prevailed and the whole plane cheered. And the electronic devices were turned off. Next week, the Big Game against the Patriots!
And that unstoppable gridiron victory machine that are the Buffalo Bills have just whupped the Raiders. Congrats, George.
After the Raiders beat the Broncos, I sent the Bills an email encourage them to spank the Raiders, Drongo. Apparently, they took my suggestion to heart.
Break up the Bills!
Somehow I don’t think Tom Brady and the hated Patriots will prove so easy.
You’re right, Jeff. The Patriots will be the yardstick on the Bills progress.
