No, this is not an economic forecast. This anthology takes classic horror short stories and turns them into graphic stories in the Tales from the Crypt tradition. Stories by Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson, David J. Schow and Paul F. Wilson are adapted by Eduardo Barreto, Toby Cypress, Mike Hoffman, Nat Jones, Ted McKeever, Tony Salmons, and Ashley Wood. In addition, Completely Doomed features the Eisner-nominated “Blood Son” by Ashley Wood and Chris Ryall, based on the Richard Matheson short story. Scott Tipton adapts another Matheson story, “Crickets,” with art by Mike Hoffman. “Slasher,” “Cuts,” and “Masks” by F. Paul Wilson all resonated with me, especially “Masks.” Eduardo Barretto illustrates David J. Schow’s “Blood Rape of the Lust Ghouls,” and Kristian Donaldson adapts Robert Bloch’s “Final Performance.” There’s also a bonus: the book includes a gallery of Doomed magazine covers. Very nice! If you were a fan of Creepy and Eerie you’ll want to check this out. GRADE: B+
Yes, we’re all doomed–but there’s still time for a bikini wax!
Meow!
Right you are, Deb.
I do like the way she co-ordinated the eyepatch with the outfit.
You have quite a fashion sense, Jeff.
“Blood Rape of the Lust Ghouls”
Not how I usually start my Monday mornings!
This looks good.
You’ll love the gallery of covers, too, Drongo!
Formidable!
Even more formidable are the covers in the COMPLETELY DOOMED gallery, Patti. There are some great graphic artists out there!
Awful cover. If it’s true – and we know it is – that the cover can produce sales, this one will have them running the other way. Perhaps the artist was trying to emulate Frank Frazetta or Mike Kaluta, but it’s too muddy and static to have a preyer of working. Bleah. As for the stories, maybe a B+ from you, but for me almost all horror is C-, so this isn’t one I’ll be buying, or reading.
The cover seems to be a Jeff Jones clone, Rick. And, yes, I’m sure the subject matter was calculated to drive sales. I’m not a huge fan of horror, but from time to time I find I’m in the mood for it.
Rick beat me to the punch. Very poor cover and imitative of Frazetta, Jones, etc.
I would have picked one of the other covers in the DOOMED gallery myself, Bob.
I was disappointed by this game try at adapting the good to insanely great fiction graphicked here…and (Mr.) Ashley Wood is rather a Jones clone, indeed…but the cover image is of the the host(ess) of the comic, in the manor of the radio hosts, and EC and Warren and DC hosts who imitated them, Ms. Doomed (iirc). Punning title to collect the whole run.
There are better horror comics anthologies.
Ms. Doomed has some charm, Todd. Yes, there are better horror graphic anthologies, but I had this one handy.
