After Robert McGinnis, my favorite paperback cover artist was Robert A. Maguire. His artwork on books like This Dark Desire and Texas Tramp made them stand out in the book racks. Who can forget the Nicole Kidman look-a-like on the cover of Alley Girl or the fiendish smile of the villain torturing the blonde on Gulf Coast Girl? Along with his unique style, Maguire maintained a high standard of quality in his cover artwork over the decades. Dames, Dolls & Gun Molls is a wonderful tribute to one of the giants of the Paperback Age. This is a “must-buy.” GRADE: A
My favorite Maguire cover is A NIGHT FOR SCREAMING.
Drongo, that’s a great cover all right. I’m partial to any Mcguire cover with a redhead on it.
The Silke name was familiar, but I couldn’t recall why until I looked him up. Of course! He did Rascals in Paradise, a very enjoyable work with great art. One disappointment about DAMES, DOLLS AND GUN MOLLS is that it has only 96 pages and therefore a limited selection of the art of this fine illustrator. Still, that’s better than none!
That said, there is lots to like about the book. Check out the flip book of this one at the Dark Horse site for more contents
DAMES, DOLLS & GUN MOLLS is a large format paperback with several paperback covers per page. The color reproduction is bright and crisp. Even at 96 pages, this book is an excellent value.
I would cover my house with these covers –if people didn’t find it strange. I just love them.
Art Scott has Robert McGinnis paintings on his walls. They look great! I would have no problem with you covering your house with great paperback artwork.
I probably like Maguire better than McGinnis, but the difference is microscopic. The thing about Art Scott is that he has some McGinnis originals on his walls. Few of us can claim that.
I’ve seen those McGinnis paintings on Art’s walls. They’re dazzling!
