Adam McKay’s dark comedy, Don’t Look Up, with its cast of stars should attract more of an audience in the run up to the Oscars. Check out who’s in this movie:
Jennifer Lawrence, a doctoral student, discovers a comet is heading for Earth. It will hit our planet in six months. Her Professor, Leonard DiCaprio, alerts the scientific community, but his news is met with some skepticism. Lawrence and DiCaprio go to Washington, D.C. to warn the President (Meryl Streep) of in impending collision which would be an extinction event.
Like the Pandemic, the prospect of a comet hitting the Earth becomes a political football. Some people believe it, many others doubt it. Adam McKay, who directs this movie and wrote the screenplay, shows how dysfunctional Government can be during a crisis. He shows how Government is influenced by money and power. And, not many people in this movie believe in Science.
If you’re in the mood for a dark comedy, Don’t Look Up will make you smile and frown at the same time! GRADE: B
I was a bit disappointed in this. There is nothing wrong with the premise. It just isn’t as funny as it wants to be. Certainly, the weakest of the Oscar nominees. I was also disappointed in King Richard which was just an okay bio pic.
Steve, you would think with a stellar cast like DON’T LOOK UP has that it would be a better movie.
I didn’t even smile faintly, and my frown was more of a yawn, really.
Dan, I smiled a couple of times, but ended up frowning at the end.
I have to agree with Steve and Dan. Great cast. So-so premise. Missed opportunity.
Jerry, I share the same opinion of DON’T LOOK UP that you, Dan, and Steve hold.
I saw this in early January and, except for the premise, I remember virtually nothing about it. So I’d call it a not unpleasant time waster. It was pretty long, and if I’d really hated it I wouldn’t have gotten through it.
Michael, DON’T LOOK UP’s running time was two hours and 25 minutes. A bit long…
I’m with the rest of you guys. B is generous. It was disappointing. Meryl was ridiculous, Jonah Hill was idiotic. Leo did a nice job for the most part. Mark Rylance was creepy. It should have been better, and funnier. Maybe a b-.
Jeff, I debated about giving DON’T LOOK UP a B-. But the essential message–don’t trust the Government to do the Right Thing–resonated with me. The execution of this movie was flawed. From what I’ve heard, Jonah Hill ad libbed almost all his lines.
So they ripped off Siegel and Schuster’s Superman premise! Besides that, I don’t watch Streep movies anymore! Hard pass!
Bob, DON’T LOOK UP is a bit more complicated than that. The world can deal with the comet…if they take the right actions.
