EASY A

Emma Stone as suburban high school student in California delights in this comic confection. Emma pretends to have sex with a friend trying to disguise his gay proclivities and that “good intention” leads her to pretending to have sex with a number of high school social outcasts. However, as the outcasts’ social status goes up after encounters with Emma, her own social status goes way down. In English class, taught by “cool” teacher Thomas Haden Church, the class is reading Hawthorne’s classic: The Scarlet Letter. Emma, feeling the student body against her, starts dressing provocatively and wearing a scarlet A on her breast. Emma has high powered parents: Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci. Lisa Kudrow plays a ditzy guidance counselor who will make you laugh. Easy A is very entertaining and surprisingly sweet. GRADE: B+

It does look good though this kind of movie is hard to get Phil to see. We saw CATFISH which I am not sure whether was entirely a hoax or not. Seeing BEHIND THE BURLY Q tonight. Had no trouble talking him into that one.

Even Phil will like EASY A, Patti. Emma Stone plays a smart, good-hearted student who is led astray by her good intensions. Phil will be able to relate to that. And you’ll both laugh at the comic complications.

Emma Stone was just cast in the new Spiderman movie, which I won’t see any more than I’ve seen the others. Will look out for EASY A on HBO or Showtime within a year.

I read your review thinking this must be a new TV show, then Patti’s comment says it’s a film. Never heard of it either way. How do you find this stuff? Oh, you read the Calendar/Film/Entertainment section of the newspaper. I only read the Book section. Last film I saw in theater was Avatar. Can’t guess when the next one will be… don’t even know where there is a movie theatre in Portland/Lake Oswego.

She looks older than a high school student in the picture.

Rick, you need to get out more. I read Roger Ebert’s reviews each week. And, like Patti, I prefer to see movies on the Big Screen (although Blu-ray movies on my 46″ HDTV look really, really nice).

Emma Stone is old enough for Spriderman, Jeff. Yes, Diane and I laugh at the “kids” who pretend they’re high school students on GLEE.

Tom Welling was laughably playing a high school student on Smallville at age 28. Supposedly he had to shave twice a day to eliminate a five o’clock shadow.

So, George, are you the Thomas Haden Church of your learning institution?

The Business Administration department at my College includes several “characters,” Drongo. I have a certain student following because I often buy pizza for my classes. But one of my colleagues is an income tax wizard (he’s never lost at an IRS audit). The Chairman of my department is worth about $9 million (depending on where the Market closes on any given day). My Office mate goes on safaris every summer can comes back with rhino heads and lion pelts. Yes, we’re a colorful group.

Theodore Sturgeon wrote in fits and starts, Evan, depending on his financial situation. When he was flush, Sturgeon seldom wrote. But, when he was broke, the floodgates would open. Thirteen volumes of short stories seems daunting, but so many of these stories are classics and so finely crafted reading them is a joy.
