The Emperess in The Empress of Mars is a bar. In fact, the Empress is the only bar on Mars. It’s run by Mary Griffin and her two beautiful daughters. Corporate interests try to manipulate the outcasts and eccentrics who make up most of the Mars colonists. Kage Baker creates an ensemble cast of quirky characters who out-fox the bureaucratic powers and stamp their independent ways on the Mars colony. I lift my glass of sweet red wine (doctor’s orders) to Kage Baker and her engaging, rag-tag group at the Empress of Mars. I have a feeling we would all fit right in. GRADE: B+
That one sounds more interesting. I like bar stories.
Jeff, I like bar stories, too. The Mistress of Mars is a bar I’d like to visit!
This one sounds like a novel I might like. Oops, Jeff already said it.
Patti, I found THE MISTRESS OF MARS to be an entertaining romp.
I reserved this, plus one of the “Company” collections of short stories.
Jeff, I’ve read some of Kage Baker “Company” books. If you like time travel, you’ll like the Company stories.
I like Kage Baker a lot, but I missed this one. I’ll fix that.
Rick, you’ll really like THE MISTRESS OF MARS. It has a lighter vibe than most of the Company books.
What a fun review.
And I think I need to see your doctor!
Carl, glad you’re enjoying MARS WEEK! Typically, my doctor is on vacation.
While she was alive, Kage Baker wrote books faster than I could read them. This one I’m sure I have, but from the description I know I haven’t read it. I wonder what box it’s in.
Steve, that is sure a familiar feeling…where is that book!? I’m slowly working to liberate all the books I have in boxes and place them on shelving, but it’s a slow process. Your search for THE MISTRESS OF MARS is certainly worth it!
