When I first read Liana Finck’s pretending list of Things I “Liked” for Men I just cracked up when I got to Hegel. And Hegel…to Gatorade! Brilliant and funny! If you’re looking for a laugh and some snarky social commentary, I highly recommend Liana Finck’s Excuse Me: Cartoons, Complaints, and Notes to Self. GRADE: A-
At first I didn’t realize it – but of course I’ve seen many of her cartoons!
Almost every day I get the New Yorker’s Humour newsletter via email (and the Borowitz Report) where I found many of her works.
The New Yorker is one of my favourite reads!
Especially funny are the competitions to find the best caption.
Wolf, like you I enjoy the cartoons in THE NEW YORKER. But, sometimes, they confuse me…or they just aren’t very funny.
I’ve seen her work in The New Yorker but didn’t know her name. My library actually has two of her books and I just put a hold on one called EXCUSE ME. This list reminds me a bit of Amy Dunne’s “cool girl” list in Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl”.
Michael, you’re right about similarities with Liana Finck’s list and Gillian Flynn’s list.
Just noticed that the book I put a hold on was THIS one. It must be too early for commenting.
Michael, I was about to point that out to you…but figured you must be suffering from Monday Morning Brain Fog.
I should pay more attention to who writes cartoons.
Patti, Liana Finck is one of my favorite cartoonists. So is Roz Chast.
Does remind me a little of Roz Chast, but as a non-New Yorker reader, I was not familiar with her work. Nevertheless, I was able to borrow the Kindle edition on your say so , so will check it out.
I agree, Hegel is funny.
Jeff, our cold weather is slowly receding. We woke up to 17 degrees this morning but we should be in the 30s by this afternoon. We might hit 50 degrees later in the week.
I read the list. I don’t get it. Why / how is it funny?
Rick, ask Barbara to read the list. I’m sure she’ll laugh and explain it to you!
I don’t see anything funny about the list, either!
Bob, have Linda read it and explain it to you.
If it was titled “Things I Pretended to Like To Make Men Happier” it might’ve worked better.
Perhaps she liked Proudhon all by herself.
Todd, good points.
Worked better for some commenters, I should hasten to add.
