EXISTENCE By David Brin

I’ve been a fan of David Brin’s work for decades, especially his Uplift series. Now, Brin shows up with a 556-page novel with a dozen major characters. An “artifact” is discovered that might be the item that leads to First Contact with advanced aliens. But, Brin plays it close to the vest: is the artifact a hoax? Is it a ploy by evil aliens to conquer Earth? Brin explores a society divided by technology. Some human embrace artificial intelligence, others want to restrain it. There are still terrorists, gangsters, political groups all empowered by trillions of dollars and powerful new computer technology. If you’re a Brin fan, you’ll want to read Existence. If you’re in the mood for a large-canvas SF novel of the near future, Existence bursts with ideas and speculation. GRADE: B+

I’ve read a number of Brin Tiltes: the first Uplift trilogy(I have the second, just haven’t gotten to it), The Postman(I;m adding something that might get my head taken off: I didn’t think the Costner movie was nearly as bad as people made it out to be. Not great mind you, just not bad on the level of Waterworld).

I’ve never seen the movie version of THE POSTMAN, Randy. Another DVD to seek out. I’ve only seen bits and pieces of WATERWORLD when it shows up on cable. I could never stay with it.

My plan for this one is to wait until it comes out in trade paper. It will take me a while to read, and I don’t want the library deadline hanging over me. Looking forward to that time, however. Seems like perfect Summer reading.

Meanwhile I just started an oldie. Hint: starts in Africa, most takes place in the U.S., most all in the south.

The paperback edition of EXISTENCE should be out around December, Rick. A perfect Christmas present! Yes, Brin’s latest novel is perfect Summer reading! My guess is you’re reading STAND ON ZANZIBAR.
