Somehow Extract slipped past me when it first came out in 2009. But I finally caught up with it and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this indy movie. The cast is impressive: Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig, Dustin Milligan, J. K. Simmons, and Ben Affleck. The plot revolves around Jason Bateman’s company that sells a variety of cooking extracts: almond, vanilla, etc. But General Mills makes an offer to buy the company. This leads to some funny consequences. The subplot is less interesting. Jason Bateman and his wife, played by Kristen Wiig, are having problems. Ben Affleck, Bateman’s friend, suggests Bateman hire a “gigolo.” The results are head-shaking. But there’s plenty in this movie to enjoy. Worth a look. GRADE: B+
I missed this one too (in fact, I’m not that sure it got released in the UK at the cinemas …) – must look it up, thanks.
I wonder if they changed the title because I sure don’t remember it as this. I like the cast a lot so will look for it.
Sergio, EXTRACT is well worth watching. I loved the cast.
Patti, EXTRACT must have opened and closed here in a week after its release. I missed it, but this DVD makes it available for the audience that will enjoy it.
I never even heard of this one before.
Bill, a student gave me a bootleg copy of EXTRACT as part of his Research Paper project. I watched it and enjoyed it.
Me either, Bill. Boy, Jason Bateman does almost as many movies as Paul Rudd.
Jeff, Jason Bateman shows up in these indy movies a lot. But he’s perfectly cast in EXTRACT as a troubled boss with a troubled marriage.
Well, Judge’s movies have never done too well in first run, iirc, even when featuring B&B. Of course, given that IDIOCRACY is almost simon-pure ripoff of C. M. Kornbluth, that lost him a lot of my sympathy, despite that film being not bad and OFFICE SPACE a bit better. I didn’t give this one as much of a shot on cable as I might’ve.
Todd, despite some of the silliness, EXTRACT was entertaining. If it shows up on cable, you might want to give it a chance.
A bootleg copy? George, shame on you!
Rick, I didn’t know what was on the student’s DVD until I started watching it. I don’t encourage bootlegs, but my students seem to be addicted to them.
