Cornell Woolrich is a classic suspense writer whose work needs to be more widely read. Centipede Press has just published this wonderful set of five Woolrich books: Speak to Me of Death, Phantom Lady, I Married a Dead Man, Deadline at Dawn, and Dark Melody of Madness. Bill Pronzini, Duane Swierczynski, Ed Gorman, Barry N. Malzberg, and Thomas C. Renzi provide the informative introductions. Centipede Press has all the details here. Subterranean Press has a $100 off special deal on this set here. If you’re looking for the perfect present for that hard-to-buy-for Cornell Woolrich fan, here is the perfect gift!
George Kelley – Stimulating the economy one book (or set) at a time.
Really, those are nice but perhaps a little pricy.
I am solely tempted, Jeff, even though I have Cornell Woolrich’s books. The Introductions would be interesting to read.
I’m with Jeff. The books look lovely, but as soon as I saw that there’s a $100 discount, I knew the price (even with said discount) would be too rich for my blood.
/Unless, of course, my powerball numbers come up on Saturday–in which case, Woolriches for everyone!
I, too, bought a POWERBALL ticket, Deb. Imagine winning $300+ million!
Thanks for the reminder, Deb. I keep forgetting to buy tickets.
Even if I were a Woolrich fan, these are to expensive for me, especially when there are cheap copies easily available on the web.
Ah, but the feeling of a well-made book, Rick…
Talk about a good/bad writer. Too much of his work verges on the unreadable, but he also wrote Deadline at Dawn, which I find vastly more entertaining than anything Chandler or Hammett ever produced. (Swierczynski is my favorite modern crime novelist, I’m curious what he says in his intro.)
The covers are intriguing, and yes, the feeling of a well-made book is a pleasure, but like everyone else here, I find the price tag a bit steep. One day, maybe.
If I win the POWERBALL millions, that Centipede edition of DEADLINE AT DAWN is yours, Drongo. I need to read more Swieczynski.
I’m a big Woolrich fan George and it’s great to see that brand spanking new editions are still being published – thanks very much for the info, especially about Speak to Me of Death and Dark Melody of Madness, neither of which I have.
This set is pricy, Sergio, but I’m very very tempted.
