BAEN Books wraps up their reprinting of A. Bertram Chandler’s John Grimes Saga with this 6th volume. This is an amazing value: 649 pages for a mere $10.99. This volume includes three novels and a six short stories that complete the story of John Grimes on the Rim of the galaxy. If your tastes run to well written science fiction adventures in time and space, you’ll enjoy these classic stories. The bonus in this book is “Around the World in 23,741 Days,” a memoir where Chandler writes about his career of seafaring and writing. I read these works when they were first published, but it’s nice to have them collected in these great omnibus volumes from BAEN. Don’t miss them! You can find my reviews of the other Grimes omnibus volumes here, here, here, here, and here.

I loved the Rim World novels when I was younger. Haven’t read any Chandler in a lot time, but I’m glad the work holds up.
Bill, I’m just happy BAEN continues to keep classic SF like Chandler’s in print.
I picked up most of the other Chandler collections after your previous reviews and have them ready on the shelf to read when the mood strikes me. (I read the first two collections.) The memoir sounds interesting too.
Jeff, I think these omnibus volumes are bargains! You get a lot of great material for the money.
Same here as Jeff, I have several of the others, have read the first two. I need to make room on the shelf for this one too
When these adventures appeared a long time ago I was really fascinated – Chandler brought a new aspect to the Space SF:
For him space was like the sea – similar to what E C Tubb described.
For Heinlein etc space was more like the “air force” – his spacemen were pilots – Chandler’s were seamen …
His Galactic Rim idea was also something new – at least for me.
Budrys noted how much Chandler was channeling C.S. Forester in sf…some of the last Grimes stories were a bit tired, but the good ones are very good indeed.
Todd, I liked the Grimes stories DAW published in the 1970s best.
