Haffner Press has done it again! A couple months ago, they published Henry Kuttner and C. L. Moore’s fabulous Detour to Otherness. Now, the Haffner Press has brought out the first installment of Henry Kuttner’s out-of-print pulp stories. This massive 712 page tome collects his work from pulp magazines that specialized in the weird, supernatural, horror, and science fiction genres. TERROR IN THE HOUSE is the first volume in a set collecting Kuttner’s earliest stories, most of which have never been reprinted. If you’re a Henry Kuttner fan, this is a must-buy! If you haven’t read any of Henry Kuttner’s wonderful stories, TERROR IN THE HOUSE is the perfect place to start. I can’t wait for Haffner Press to bring out the rest of these Kuttner volumes!

I think I was 13 or so when I first read Graveyard Rats. A perfect age to do so.
How’s the Matheson intro? Does he say anything noteworthy?
Matheson’s Introduction added to my meager knowledge of Henry Kuttner, Drongo. Loved “Graveyard Rats” when I was a kid, too!
Haffner is certainly among those continuing the good work of NESFA Press…and such antecedants in bug-crushing as Carcosa…
Haffner Books unearths all of these forgotten stories, Todd. They deserve a medal!
I do hope the THRILLING MYSTERY items are a cut above the usual shudder…
The stories in this volume vary in quality, Todd. But there are enough gems to make the book well-worth buying.
I love this volume, but I would have been even more excited if, as in the Jack Williamson volumes, they had reprinted covers on the end papers. There’s no pleasing some people, I know.
I know what you mean, Scott. I would have loved to have seen those THRILLING WONDER covers, too. But costs enter into any project and maybe Haffner Press was trying to keep this huge book affordable.
I got this the other day. I have some questions about proofreading and grammar in the Robert intro.
Editing seems to be a Lost Art, Bill.
Damn. If this is only the stuff from these genres, and only the early years, how many stories did he write??
I think there is another 700+ page volume of Henry Kuttner’s early stories in the works, Evan. I’ll buy that one, too!
It isn’t even all of those, Evan…he was writing for the likes of HORROR STORIES (pure shudder pulp), and at least one collaboration with Robert Bloch is missing (from the first issue of STRANGE STORIES…a decent one, too).
Maybe those stories will be included in the next volume, Todd. I’d like to read that collaboration with Robert Bloch.
I WANT IT. NOW.
I’M BUYING IT. NOW.
I like your attitude, Rick.
It’s in the mail from A-zon, my Prime account means free shipping and there’s no sales tax (did anyone notice A-zon has started collecting sales tax for some states? CA won’t be far behind if they haven’t already done it). So this book, and a Hamilton collection, will be here in a day or two. Yay!
Like you, Rick, I love Haffner Press. I order just about everything they publish. I’ve preordered their next Henry Kuttner volume.
Thanks for kind words, all. FYI, there were four stories cut from the finished book in addition to *two* collaborations with Bloch. There are plans for these in the (near) future.
Scott Crupp: color endpapers would have been nice, but it would result in losing a minimum of 100 pages of text, plus there are 40+ stories here. The images of these covers would have been very small to fit on the endpapers . . .
In terms of editing and proofreading. . . . Well, Roberts’ intro actually came in 2000 words longer than printed, and the inept proofing job on the table of contents resulted in no longer working with this particular project’s proofreader. If interested, a .pdf of the corrected Table of Contents may be downloaded here: http://haffnerpress.com/9781893887473.html.
Keep Watching the Skies!
Thanks for the update, Stephen! I’m looking forward to your next Kuttner volume.
Keep Watching the Skies, George!
Next up is THUNDER IN THE VOID, followed by a collaborative volume by HK with Arthur K. Barnes: HOLLYWOOD ON THE MOON / MAN ABOUT TIME: THE PETE MANX ADVENTURES. After that, Volume Two of “early Kuttner.” Beyond that, who knows? Maybe something(s) grey/gray and murderously mysterious? Or, perhaps, something that will send you into a “fury”?

I love your hints, Stephen. I’ve always liked Henry Kuttner’s FURY, another of his underrated books. As always, whatever you publish I’ll buy. Keep up the Good Work!
