FORGOTTEN MUSIC #21: SOME GIRLS: DELUXE EDITION [Remastered] By The Rolling Stones

Some Girls represents the last great Rolling Stones album. Many of the tracks that ended up on the Stones’ next two albums, Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You, were recorded during the Some Girls sessions. This new, remastered version of Some Girls was released just before Christmas so it may have been lost in the holiday frenzy. Not only does this new version of Some Girls sound great, but the Deluxe Edition includes additional tracks that are well worth listening to if you’re a Stones fan. GRADE: A

Yes–one of their greats and, probably, as you say, their last great album. I remember being shocked when I heard the “Emotional Rescue” album at how the quality had declined. I think “Tattoo You” was the last Stones’ album I purchased (other than when I was moving everything over to CD and compilation stuff). I still think that “Beast of Burden” and “Shattered” can stand up against most of the Stones’ best songs.

The Stones’ quality control fell off a cliff after TATTOO YOU, Deb. The SOME GIRLS sessions produced some great hits and, with this new re-mastered version, sounds terrific.

I agree with Deb – Tattoo You was probably the last Stones album I bought too. I’ve been resisting the Remastered Deluxe edition but your recommendation may push this into an online shopping cart soon.
Harking back to my Catholic upbringing, you, George, are an occasion of sin.

Well, the Stones are pretty much done, now–they’re not touring any longer, are they? They’re certainly shattered as a continuous working unit. TATTOO YOU was, by me, slightly better than SOME GIRLS, but I’m a sucker for Sonny Rollins on a rock album (and “Waiting on a Friend” trumps “When the Whip Comes Down” by me).

I’m a fan of that (I think) uncredited Sonny Rollins sax performance on “Waithing On a Friend,” too, Todd. It certainly trumps “When the Whip Comes Down.” The Stones are Senior Citizens now. Any tour would be a bad joke.
