FORGOTTEN MUSIC #42: MOONDANCE By Van Morrison [Expanded Edition 2 CDs]

I first listened to Van Morrison’s Moondance album (yes, the actual vinyl!) back in 1970 and I knew I was listening to a great artist. No one sounds like Van Morrison. Many of the songs on this album went on to become hits. “Moondance” is iconic. But I like “Into the Mystic” even better. “Caravan” still sounds great. And who can sit still when “Come Running to Me” comes on! This new release of Moondance has been completely remastered and sounds wonderful! I listened to DISC 2 with all the alternative versions and outtakes. But I’ll be listening to DISC 1 much, much more. GRADE: A

It’s hard for me to think of “Moondance” as being forgotten. Like you, I listened to this on vinyl back in the day. I have Van’s greatest hits on CD, so don’t really know if I need another collection–but a lot if those songs are classics now.

Deb, I seldom hear Van Morrison on the contemporary music stations around here. Many people consider MOONDANCE Morrison’s best album. I think WAVELENGHT is better, but not by much!

Jimmy Buffett does “Brown Eyed Girl” at most of his concerts, Patti.

I first became aware of Van with his version of “Here Comes the Night” (as) by Them in 1965. My favorites of his are “Domino” (his tribute to Fats Domino) and “Wild Night.” Like Deb I have the Greatest Hits and play it regularly.

I’m another who has the Greatest Hits CD and for me, that’s enough. I don’t listen to it very often, maybe once a year. I much prefer Boz Skaggs “Silk Degrees” album. Not sure why one reminded me of the other….

I like Morrisson, too, but I won’t be getting the CD. It’s just me. I rarely listen to music at home. I thought about getting McCartney’s latest the other day and it was $17.95. Yikes!
