George, I need to listen to more Joe Cocker. Haven’t really paid the singer much attention since listening to his duet “Up Where We Belong” with Celine Dion.
Prashant, I go way back to the 1970s as a fan of Joe Cocker. His career produced some fine music.
I like his Mad Dogs & Englishmen/Leon Russell era stuff—especially “Delta Lady” and “With A Little Help from My Friends.”
Deb, I just listened to Joe Cocker’s version of “With A Little Help from My Friends” yesterday. Very rousing!
Me too!
I think Mad Dogs was the first record of his that I bought.
And my favourite – of course Bird on the Wire, though .”Bathroom Window” and “With a little help …” are great too.
We have several DVDs of him, one is a concert in Berlin – three days after the Berlin Wall fell – what a pity that I couldn’t be there.
PS and a bit OT:
Can you imagine our surprise when we went to one of the first concerts of Blues guy Joe Bonmassa in Germany and he sang and played on his guitar:
Bird on a Wire?
Wolf, I have a DVD of Joe Cocker, too. But he’s best known for his live performance at Woodstock.
Guess I just never understood his appeal.
Michael, a lot of people don’t respond to Joe Cocker’s voice. I think it’s an acquired taste.
We saw him (with Beth and Wilba) at Jazzfest, and then again at Jones Beach. I love the live version of “The Letter” as well as “With a Little Help From My Friends.” I love the Woodstock version.
Jeff, love Joe Cocker’s version of “The Letter,” too. But, I still love the Boxtops’ original also.
Woodstock showed us German students what was possible in rock music – my friends and I were fascinated by it and felt really sorry that there was nothing comparable in Europe, except for England of course.
Can you imagine how frustrated I was when I went to London and heard from a friend who lived there for a year that just one or two weeks ago he’d been to the only concert of Blind Faith in Hyde Park?
I heard and saw some Greats on my visit to London – but not Joe Cocker.
Love his voice.
Patti, Joe Cocker’s voice is certainly unique.
I love his early work. These albums are his later ones which are not among his best. With A Little Help From My Friends is probably my favorite.
Steve, Joe Cocker performs “With a Little Help from My Friends” on the live CD included in this box set. Here’s the track list from the live album:
“Feelin’ Alright” (Dave Mason) – 4:43
“Shelter Me” (Nick Di Stefano) – 4:26
“Hitchcock Railway” (Donald Lewis Dunn, Tony McCashen) – 3:58
“Up Where We Belong” (Jack Nitzsche, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Will Jennings) – 4:35
“Guilty” (Randy Newman) – 2:40
“You Can Leave Your Hat On” (Randy Newman) – 4:20
“When the Night Comes” (Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance, Diane Warren) – 4:52
“Unchain My Heart” (Robert W. “Bobby” Sharp, Jr.) – 5:50
“With a Little Help from My Friends” (John Lennon, Paul McCartney) – 9:13
“You Are So Beautiful” (Billy Preston, Bruce Fisher) – 4:23
“The Letter” (Wayne Carson Thompson) – 4:31
“She Came in Through the Bathroom Window” (Paul McCartney) – 2:30
“High Time We Went” (Joe Cocker, Chris Stainton) – 7:58
“What Are You Doing With a Fool Like Me” (Diane Warren) – 4:51 – Studio bonus track
“Living in the Promiseland” (David Lynn Jones) – 3:55 – Studio bonus track
We have that CD too. Jackie’s favorite is the “Up Where We Belong” duet with Jennifer Warnes.
Jeff, Jackie has great taste in music!
Just a simple greatest hits CD would be sufficient. This is too much.
Rick, you know me: nothing succeeds like excess!
But…you have to STORE it someplace!
Rick, fortunately, I have a very large basement.
Reading the last comments I realised that one of Joe’s strengths was that he attracted really good (though not as famous …) musicians.
Just a selection of names:
Leon Russell
Dave Mason who played with Traffic (one of my favourites)
Chris Stainton who has been a feature of many concerts with Eric Clapton (my wife’s favourite) and Steve Winwood (my favourite).
So because of this I listened to Joe Cocker last night while reading in bed. I play Apple Music at night on my iPad. Very enjoyable. I don’t know that I actually own any of his albums, but I was listening to my Woodstock cds a couple months ago and hearing him inspired me to call up Mad Dogs and Englishmen on Apple Music.
Like Wolf, Traffic is one of my absolute favorite bands. I play them a lot.
Just a few years ago we went to an open-air concert in Munich with Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, of course they sang and played many Blind Faith and Traffic songs.
Btw there are (at least …) two Traffic sites, private groups on facebook which link to their songs and often have nice pictures.
Welcome to the canteen
Contraflow remembering traffic
I’m not a real facebook fan, but some of these groups really show good info.
Jeff, like you I’m a fan of Traffic. They musical holds up over the decades.
Except the fidelity is lousy on the iPad, as opposed to a CD on a real stereo with good speakers!
I thought of one more song of his that I like, “Cry Me A River”—a unique take on the Julie London classic.
Deb, yes, I like Cocker’s version of “Cry Me a River,” too. A unique arrangement!
Wolf, we saw Steve Winwood in concert a few years ago. He did some Traffic material along with his solo stuff.
His “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” originally by The Animals, is also a great song! I like Joe a lot! Too bad he’s no longer with us!
Bob, Joe Cocker had a good run.
Rick, you talk about the low fidelity on the iPad. I listen to cds all day, not the tablet. In bed, I’m reading while Ann’s asleep, so I’m playing it at a pretty low volume. It doesn’t sound great, but it sounds good enough.
