Katie needed a GPS for the Altima we’re lending her. With her new hospice job, Katie needed a way to find her clients in the Boston area easily. Bill Crider and other friends recommended the Garmin GPS line. Diane, Katie, and I went to BEST BUY and found the Garmin Nuvi 50LM at a reasonable price. The audio is crisp and clear. The Garmin features accurate maps with an easy to use interface on a nice, big 5″ touch screen. We picked the model with the life-time updates (an extra $30). If you’re looking for a GPS for your car, consider the Garmin line.
I know she doesn’t need to be told this, but because I’m a mother of driving- (or almost) driving-) age girls, I think about these things: Don’t put your home address on the GPS or if your car is stolen, someone can drive right to your house (with directions) to clean you out before you get home.

Thanks for the safety tip, Deb. We’ve talked about this with Katie so I’m sure she’ll be careful. Katie will use the Garmin to get from her hospice office to various clients in the Boston area. The Garmin Nuvi 50LM is about the size of an iPhone. Katie plans to carry it with her and not leave it in the Altima.
That was the other suggestion – do not leave it in the car – but of course you knew that.
I know Beth is a Garmin fan yet somehow when she and Jackie and Maggie were laying waste to Orlando they were calling me in Brooklyn for directions!
The Garmin takes some getting used to, Jeff. Katie had the whole thing figured out in less than an hour! Kids and their technologies!
Yes, I am a Garmin fan and I too got the lifetime updates.
And, yes, we did need Jeff’s help navigating around Orlando. Once, when Maggie and I were in Cleveland and on our way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Garmin froze up on us. Talk about panic! And, about ten minutes later, we were back on, getting the directions we so desperately needed. I attribute it all to operator error. Whenever we set out on our road trips, Maggie takes the Garmin away from me – too much swearing, etc. while trying to program it. But – most of the time – it’s reliable.
It beats the pants off of MapQuest.
Katie loves the Garmin’s turn-by-turn navigation, Beth. Our Nissan Rogue has a GPS built-in.
Beth, for the less technical types, or those whose tech might hiccup, there are these marvelous things called maps.
Oh, by the way, my wife just uses her smart phone for the map features including that irritating voice that says things like “turn left 100 feet”. Me? I use one of those map thingies. Never failed me yet.
Katie could have used the GPS app for her iPhone, Rick. But she doesn’t have an unlimited data plan so she figured that might eat up too much of her limit. I really like the Garmin’s 5″ inch screen and life-time updates.
