GODZILLA

GODZILLA
Fans of puny humans scurrying around like ants as giant monsters battle, rejoyce! Godzilla features several epic scenes of mass urban destruction. I would have liked to see more of David Strathairn and Byran Cranston. The talented Juliette Binoche isn’t given much to do. This is not an actors’ movie, it’s a monster movie. Spectacle, explosions, and action are at the forefront of this movie. Movies like Godzilla are metaphors for our fears: global warming turning Miami into Atlantis, climate change that will render much of the southern U.S. unlivable, antibiotic-resistant diseases, terrorists with nukes, etc. But I just ate my popcorn and enjoyed an entertaining Summer Movie. GRADE: B

I can’t bring myself to watch any of the newer GODZILLA movies (or indeed any of the dozens of Japanese sequels.) I saw the original(Americanized) GODZILLA at the movies and since then my life has been kind of a disappointment.

Dan, I loved those original Godzilla movies when I was a kid. But even then, I could tell there were guys in monster suits fighting. This new GODZILLA movie spends a lot of money on the monsters so they look real and scary.

I was surprised to see Bryan Cranston chose this for his first post-Breaking Bad film. Not much about acting, I guess.

Absolutely. Patti, Cranston is playing Lyndon Johnson on Broadway so I’m sure the money from GODZILLA helps make up the loss of the TV salary.

Bill, I’ve only seen GODZILLA and the sequels on TV. Trust me: the production values of this new version of GODZILLA are light-years beyond the original.

I saw the original at a drive-in theater when I was a kid.

Isn’t most of the Southeast unlivable now?

Bob, I consider most of the Southeast and Southwest too hot for human habitation. And the heat is creeping North every year.

I’m planning on sloping into the theater late next week when hopefully it won’t be so crowded. I have a choice of 2-D, 3-D or IMAX 3-D. Is this worth the extra $ for the latter?

Stan, Bill Crider loves 3D movies so this might really appeal to him, too. As you say, “perfect summer popcorn movie.” GODZILLA took in $38 million on Friday alone!
