GOING FOR THE OLYMPIC GOLD: TEAM USA VS. CANADA

Today, at 3 P.M. EDT, everything will stop in Canada. That’s when they’ll drop the puck for the Gold Medal game between Team USA and Team Canada. A week ago, the USA pulled an enormous upset, beating the Canadians 5-3. The U. S. Men’s Hockey Team hadn’t beaten Canada in the Olympics since 1960…50 years ago! Well, here we go again: the heavily favored Canadian team, yearning to avenge their loss of last week, will be skating as if they’re wearing jets. Ryan Miller, Team USA’s gritty goaltender, turned away 42 of 45 shots the last time these teams played. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Canadians fired over 50 shots at Miller today. If Team USA wins today, it will be as unlikely a win as the 1980 upset of the mighty Russians.

** Y A W N ** Hopefully there will be some curling on so I can get some excitement… On the last day of the WinOlys, they give time for an entire hockey game, pretty much blowing the whole Sunday afternoon slot. I hope all you hockey fans have a good game to watch. I’ll be reading.

The entire country of Canada will come to a standstill, Rick. Hockey is a religion up there! As for curling, I even watched the Canadian Women’s team with the hot redhead, Cheryl Bernard.

I think the curling is over, Rick. The Canadians pulled out the gold medal.

I couldn’t believe how much coverage the event got over the last two weeks. To me it’s shuffleboard on ice.

Art Scott and I were drooling over the leader of the Canadian Women’s team, Jeff. I’m still not sure of the rules, but maybe Rick can enlighten us.

Agree. Of course i was being my usual sarcastic self, trying for the most boring thing I could conjure from the list of WinOly “sports”.

Enjoy the game, George. I’ll be out of town starting necx Friday and have to get my apazine copied and off the The Emperor before we leave, so I’ll be pounding the keyboard instead of watching.

There was to be some hope for the rest of us, as the hockey game wasn’t due to come on until Noon here (live! live!) and the telecast was set for 11:00. No, when we turned it on, hoping to see the final cross-country skiing event, there’s some film playing. I guess by using mirrors, string, balancing boards on tree branches and other time honored tricks, NBC has managed to shoot itself not just in both feet, but in both hands as well. Gotta admire that!

NBC says they’re broadcasting the Gold Medal Hockey game LIVE in all time zones, Rick. They did include a bunch of gas-bags giving their opinions before the game. Drop the damn puck!

Team USA is down 2-1 going into the Third Period, Jeff. The U.S. team is the youngest hockey team in the Olympics. Can their youth give them the edge over the older Canadian team who had to play that extra game? We’ll know in about 40 minutes!

Well, it was sure an exciting finish and I guess they gain by taking it to overtime even though they lost. And I believe it meant a lot more to the Canadians (so much so that Jackie was rooting for them!).

    Good game.

Yes, it was a good game, Jeff. The younger, less experienced USA team took the heavily favored Canadians to the brink. This will pay big dividends in 2014.

I didn’t get much reading done, but I did take a nap. When I woke up the game was on the TV so I turned up the volume a little and watched a few minutes.

I couldn’t tell which team was which. The camera work was fast, pulled back and there were no obvious clues. The announcer only used players last names (never something like “Jones for the USA has the puck” or “Canada’s Krenshaw takes a shot”). Of course I don’t know the names of any of the players.

I only figured it out when a goal was scored and the fellow shouted “Canada has won!” several times. Later I saw USA on the front of the dark blue shirts and a maple leaf on the front of the red and white. Since hockey players seem to skate all hunched over, how was one to know? Anyway, on the news and Olympic broadcast they can’t stop talking about what a great game it was, so I assume you all are pleased, even if the USA didn’t win.

Don’t know how a game in 2010 can “pay dividends” four years from now, but I assume you know what you’re talking about, George, since you’re almost always right. I didn’t get much reading done, but I did take a nap.

For those of us who like hockey and were following the Olympic Men’s Hockey team, the Gold Medal game was great, Rick. Plenty of action and suspense. Sadly, you watched the NBC coverage of the game which was crappy. The CBC version was 100 times better. You would have had no problem following the game if you listened to that broadcast crew. Naps are good.
