I saw Guardians of the Galaxy in a Regal Theater with about 30 other fans, half of them kids. This is a movie for 12-year-olds (or the 12-year-old inside many of us). A team of misfits are thrown into a high security alien prison. Of course, they break out. The plot involves an alien artifact called “The Infinity Stone” that grants incredible powers. But, typically, the Infinity Stone falls into the hands of a villain who plans to use it to destroy a planet. There’s plenty of action and silliness. I liked Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana. Karen Gillian (the Best Dr. Who Companion ever!) goes to the Dark Side in this movie. If you’re looking for an entertaining Summer Movie, Guardians of the Galaxy qualifies. GRADE: B+
I saw it Friday at noon with about 12 others. Don’t see where they are getting these huge grosses numbers they are bantering around.
I loved it
Stan, I’m guessing the night performances must be packed with paying audiences.
A racoon, with a big gun? I’m guessing this is based on a comic book, which may explain a lot.
James, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is another MARVEL action movie. Bradley Cooper is the voice of the the clever raccoon.
And Vin Diesel is the walking tree, right? This got surprisingly good reviews here. Even the NY Times liked it.
Jeff, Vin Diesel only says three words (with different enunciations) but everyone loves the walking tree guy. This movie is worth a look.
Actually he says five . He says ‘we are’ instead of ‘I’ am’ at the end when he is sheltering all of them before the crash.
Vin Diesel is perfectly cast. Always thought his acting rather wooden.
Steve, you wouldn’t think Diesel and wood would go together…but they do!
So happy to see you enjoyed it. It definitely excited and thrilled the 12 year old who is still alive and well inside of me. The action and humor and cast of characters reminded me of the kind of adventure sci-fi that lit the spark of passion in me when I was young…younger than 12. 🙂 I can see why it did such a great job at the box office. Box Office Mojo has a nice write up about it today, discussing its appeal and how soundly it broke the August weekend opening record.
Carl, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was fun to watch. I’m glad they’ve green-lighted a sequel, but I wish it would show up earlier than 2017!
Yes, it is way too far off, in my opinion. Which I imagine is entirely due to the fact that they need to fit it in with the rest of their Marvel film plans, continuity-wise.
Carl, you’re probably right about the logistics of the MARVEL movie schedule. But, I wish we didn’t have to wait until 2017!
I feel exactly the same way. It makes me wish they would have went ahead and truly let this be a stand alone series for a while, happening off in some remote part of the Marvel Universe, and only bring them in later for some big universe-shaking crisis.
Carl, sometimes I feel the MARVEL universe is getting a little too crowded.
