Happy Mother’s Day to all of you hard-working moms! Katie gave Diane a signed first edition of Anna Quindlen’s new book, Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake. Nice! Patrick is in Barcelona, Spain for a job interview. I’m sure he’ll bring Diane a wonderful present (nudge, nudge) back from Spain. We’re hosting Diane’s Mom and my Mom and eight other guests for Mother’s Day dinner. We’re reenacting Thanksgiving: turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, salad, veggies, chocolate cake, and strawberry short cake. Yum!
Happy Mother’s Day, Diane! Ditto to both of your mothers and all other moms out there. The menu sounds perfect for me – as fa as I’m concerned, you cannot go wrong with turkey and stuffing at any time of the year. Strawberry shortcake is certainly on Jackie’s Top Five desserts list too.
I’m looking forward to reading the ANna Quindlen book too. I’m a big fan.
Diane’s read all of Anna Quindlen’s books, Jeff. That made it easy for Katie to decide on which book to send Diane for Mom’s Day.
We always do Mother’s Day (and Father’s Day) dinners the night before to avoid the restaurant rush. We went to a our favorite Chinese restaurant last night and had a feast; our oldest is back from college, so all our children were with us. I have enough mu shu pork left over for two lunches in the week. Yum! I’m always the first one up in the morning and today is no exception; when everyone else gets up, I’ll be the recipient of gifts. Not sure what, but I’ve seen some Bed, Bath, & Beyond and Bath & Bodyworks receipts recently.
George, after that big meal, I hope you aren’t going to make Diane do the dishes!
When we throw a party, Deb, the guests end up doing the dishes. Of course, we have a dish washer so that does most of the work. Diane hosts most family events like Mother’s Day because her 92-year-old mother, who lives with us, finds it difficult to leave the house. Sounds like that Chinese food was delicious!
Happy Mothers Day, Deb.
It’s rather bittersweet for us as my mother died last month at 86 after a very short, quick illness. But we jsut saw her in January at their 65th Wedding Anniversary.
We have several friends who lost their mothers in the past year, Jeff. Our hearts go out to you and them.
So sorry about your mom, Jeff. I noticed a couple of weeks back that it seemed you hadn’t been commenting on the blogs as much as you usually do–this must have been the reason. I know you have many happy memories of your mom and can still honor her today even if she’s not physically with you now. Take care.
Thanks. We were out in Arizona for a week.
George, Jackie wants to know if the new faucet was Diane’s present.
Tell Jackie that the Moen faucet was just a repair, Jeff. Diane’s present is a trip to Boston next weekend.
Happy Mother’s Day to all of your clan, George! That meal sounds stupendous, and stupefying. I’ll just have a slice of that cake and a big platter of the shortcake, please.
Don’t think Barbara will get anything again this year, She insists that since she’s not my mother I’m not to give her anything. She has a Skype call with one of her daughters. The other one never remembers any holiday, never calls unless she has a problem she thinks we can give her some money to fix, doesn’t even send a Christmas or Birthday card. I think it’s outrageous, but as stepdad, it’s none of my business. If we weren’t on this strict diet, I’d take her out to dinner, and like Deb we would have done it last night.
Thanks for the good Mom’s Day wishes, Rick. Diane’s ultimate Mother’s Day present would be to have Patrick and Katie home today. But, Patrick’s in Barcelona and Katie’s in Boston. Fortunately, we’ll all be together next weekend in Boston for Katie’s graduation. You’re wise to stay out of the problems of Barbara’s children.
Yes, but it sure bugs me at times. She raised them better than that, but they are both so self-absorbed they think of little but their own life.
By the way, I had my best weight-in yet, lost 5 pounds last week. Just staying on the diet. It gets hard sometimes, toward the end of the week, but a good result on Monday morning weigh-in makes it worthwhile.
I admire your discipline, Rick. I’m working on losing weight before my knee surgery next month. But graduation parties and retirement parties and birthday parties throw a wrench into my dieting plans.
This is one I actually want to read at some point. I haven’t read any of Quindlen’s fiction but I’ve enjoyed her non-fiction works.
I enjoyed reading Quindlen’s column before she gave it up, Carl. And, I discovered I own a copy of Charles de Lint’s TAPPING THE DREAM TREE. I’ll try to read along with you.
