Hapy Valentina’s Day to you all!
Though I’m always a bit angry because all of these holidays (like Mother’s Day etc) have been turned into shopping days.
The amount of crap that’s being sold there …
I sadly concur and it has only gotten more pathetic here in the states over the past decade. The worse late stage capitalism gets the more people (especially Americans) cling desperately to it in the futile hope that buying even more garbage will somehow magically fill the void in their souls.
I feel grateful for the few girlfriends I’ve had who hated the whole Valentine’s Day industrial complex as much as I do and wanted nothing more than a quiet dinner followed by a night curled up on the couch watching a movie.
Byron, capitalistic materialism runs rampant in the U.S. What was Trump’s most successful Election “promise”? He was going to lower prices on EVERYTHING so people could buy more. I’m always amazed at the elaborate (and expensive) prom/wedding proposals which of course have to be filmed on posted online. We attended a wedding last year that cost about $100,000–and the married couple has already split. I prefer, like you, the unpretentious and genuine quiet dinner and time on the couch with the Love of My Life.
Deb
Today marks our 38th anniversary as a couple (we’d been dating, but February 14, 1987, was the day we made it official as in being exclusive and planning a future together). Chicken wings are already in the fridge marinating in a buttermilk-hot sauce mixture. John will be grilling (and I’ll be enjoying) them later this evening. Hearts and flowers to all!
Deb, congratulations of your 38th Anniversary as a couple. Chicken wings might be on our menu tonight when I take Diane to her favorite local restaurant, The Hideaway Grille. The harpist might be playing, too!
Jeff, I had a crush on Diane in High School, but unlike you and Jackie it took until our 10th High School Reunion for me to make my move. Luck was with me because Diane had just broken up with the guy she dated for years so she was available. He had commitment issues.
Happy day after! 1987 was the year my first serious romantic relation of any duration began, as well…a little more than a decade later, we parted on good terms, had a small vacation together with ex benefits, a little later I wrote her one of her grad school application letters of recommendation. (Database editor/network reporter at TV GUIDE was one of the more “important” titles among her coterie of those she could trust to write one.)
She’s doing important work now. Nearly every important woman in my life has ended up in medicine, in one way or another.

Wolf, capitalism is at the heart of Holidays!

Happy Valentine’s Day to you, George, and to your marvelous heartthrob! May you celebrate many, many more.
Jerry, thanks for your kind words!
Happy Valentines to all who celebrate.
Deb, we are 20 years ahead of you! January 14, 1967 was our official first date. Within a few months we knew.
