I’m sure most of you have seen Willow Smith’s classic video, “I Whip My Hair.” But, you may not have seen Jimmy Fallon (impersonating Neil Young) do a completely different version of the song (which I like a lot better than Willow’s). Watch a bit of the original and then watch Jimmy Fallon channel his inner Neil Young and completely transform the song. And, if you watch the Fallon video long enough, you’ll see a Special Guest! Nope – haven’t seen it, nor would I watch it if I accidentally came across it.
I don’t care for Jimmy Fallon but I do like Neil Young so will check that part out.
Jimmy Fallon nails the Neil Young impersonation, Jeff.
Jimmy’s really too pretty to pass for Neil Young–but he has the quavery voice down pat. Love the Boss’s cameo, but on the whole do not care for either version of this inexplicably popular song.
WHIP MY HAIR has become a phenomenon, Deb. Both versions are popular. I thought Fallon had Neil Young’s voice down pat. I’d like to hear the real Neil Young sing WHIP MY HAIR!
I thought she was awful but I miss admit Fallon really got Neil down pat. I’d love to see him do a duet on it with Neil.
My thought exactly, Jeff! Wouldn’t it be great to see Jimmy Fallon and the real Neil Young sing WHIP MY HAIR!
Jeff–it would be similar to the John Belushi-Joe Cocker “Dueling Cockers” or the John Belushi-Peter Boyle (?) “Dueling Brandos” from SNL (back when I used to watch it–that is, a looooong time ago).
Good point, Deb! I remember that “Dueling Cockers” bit. It stuns me to see Willow Smith’s song get transformed into a faux-Neil Young folk song. Who comes up with this stuff? My brain just doesn’t work that way.
Smith looks like a mistreated, abused 8 year old, and I doubt the music is any better. You’re going off the deep end, George.
I doubt that Willow Smith, daughter of actor Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, is an abused child, Rick. Their son, Jaden Smith, did a fine job in the remake of THE KARATE KID. I’m guessing Willow Smith is being groomed for an entertainment career, too.
Jimmy Fallon has good taste in music…he just isn’t that funny. So it doesn’t surprise me that among his more impressive bits might be a good impersonation of someone as distinctive as NY…or that it might occur to his staff that it’d be funny that he as NY would cover a piece of recent fluff…
Who ever came up with the “Neil Young sings WHIP MY HAIR” should get a raise, Todd. Like you, I don’t fine Fallon very funny. But he pulled off a great Neil Young impression.
Didn’t say she was abused, said she looks it – the haircut is bad news.
That hair style seems all the rage, Rick. What really perplexes me are the NFL players, like Clay Matthews of Green Bay, who play with long hair. I’d think that could really be painful.
Thanks for putting up the Smith kid’s video. I hadn’t seen it. I watched about 30 seconds and decided I preferred the Fallon/Springsteen version.
I’m old.
I much prefer the Fallon/Stpringsteen version, too, Beth. But I thought people might want to see where the song originally came from. Converting a rap song into a folk song boggles my mind.
Hey, if Richard Thompson could, as he has, rehabilitate “Oops, I Did It Again”…
Love Richard Thompson, Todd!
