One of the swimmers at the pool I work out at told me his daughter had a part in a movie. I asked, “What movie?” He replied, “In a World.” After a few months, In a World showed up at one of our arty theaters and I went to see it. It’s the story of a small group of voice artists who record the voice-overs for movie trailers. The King of this small world was the legendary Don LaFontaine (who died in 2008). In a World sets up a competition between three voice-over artists to see who will narrate the trailer to a new epic movie series. Director Lake Bell keeps the subplots spinning as the competition reaches its climax. I liked the surprises in this quirky independent movie. If In A World shows up in your town, you’l enjoy it. GRADE: B+
I remember liking her in BOSTON LEGAL in a slightly thankfless role but this sounds very amusing – one should support ‘quirky’!
Sergio, I found IN A WORLD delightfully different. You would enjoy it!
I liked it very much until the last twenty minutes when for me it went off the tracks with the award banquet scene.
Don LaFontaine:
“In a world where…”
“He’s a one-man army…”
“From the bedroom to the boardroom to…”
“Nowhere to Run. Nowhere to Hide. And no way out…”
“Don’t Try This at Home”
Patti, you’re right about that award banquet scene. Lame.
Jeff, I love that GEICO commercial where Don LaFontaine “interprets” a policy-holder’s statements. Classic!
A generation before LaFontaine it was Art Gilmore who had the trailer voice-over franchise. 2700+ according to the site cited (always wanted an opportunity to do that!) below. Instantly identifiable voice, nice guy – met him several times at the Seattle Old Time Radio convention. Have a look here:

Art, great link! I remember Art Gilmore doing those voice-overs for COMMANDER CODY. Wonderful stuff!
This does sound interesting. Which part did your friend’s daughter play? Art, thanks for that link.
I’ve had this in my Netflix queue since I saw the trailer on another DVD a couple of months ago. It looked interesting
Rick, my friend’s daughter plays “Pippa.” She’s a cutie.
Stan, you’ll really like IN A WORLD. It’s very different.
