Kinky Boots comes to town, finally. This musical comedy is just what we need to lift our spirits after the Winter we’ve endured. The music by Cyndi Lauper is supposed to be fun. We’re seeing Kinky Boots at Sheas Performing Arts Center during today’s matinee performance. The show is sold out. Have you seen Kinky Boots? What did you think?
UPDATE: We enjoyed Kinky Boots. Plenty of high-energy singing and dancing! The sell-out crowded laughed a lot. GRADE: B+
No, but at least a dozen people have told me how great it is. Have a wonderful time.
Patti, all the reviews we’ve seen about KINKY BOOTS have been very positive.
We haven’t seen it either. I know it got great reviews but frankly, it has never interested me. For me, drag is a drag.
Jeff, we saw a local play, QUEEN OF BINGO, that was done in drag by the cast. A little of that goes a long way.
I’m sure it’s good. I saw PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT and thought it was soso, especially compared with the movie, which I really liked. And of course I enjoyed HAIRSPRAY a lot.
So forget the comment. I think the problem is that some people without ideas use guys in dresses as a “hilarious” short cut that doesn’t disguise their mediocre material. When shows are good they’re good and I’m sure this one is one of those.
Jeff, that was the case with QUEEN OF BINGO. Guys in drag could not make up for the weak material.
I’m reading a book about Rogers & Hammerstein, so I’d rather see Oklahoma! or South Pacific right now, thanks.
Rick, I’ve seen OKLAHOMA and SOUTH PACIFIC. I’m ready for something different.
I consider those classics, and the ones Steve lists below, and love them all, well worth repeated viewings. All a matter of taste!
Rick, you’re right. the classics are enjoyable forever. KINKY BOOTS is just popular right now.
Count me out. Not a big musical fan. The only two in recent memory I have liked were Book of Mormon and Hedwig and the Angry Itch. Have never liked the big 50’s and 60’s productions such as My Fair Lady, The Music Man, The King and I or Sound of Music(watching this I found it akin to torture.)
Steve, I liked BOOK OF MORMON, too. Once in a while I’m in the mood for those Big Production numbers.
