Jerry, it’s raining cats-and-dogs here. Diane plans to bake a Lemon Drizzle Cake today (I’ll be busy with the lemon zest). Dinner will be salads and pizza and maybe ice cream.
Patti, the College classes started the day after Labor Day so this was always the last day of Summer Vacation for me. Diane’s classes sometimes started the week before Labor Day and sometimes after Labor Day depending on their busing schedule.
Our schools reopened the first week of August, so we’re halfway through the first quarter already. Tomorrow I’m expecting to see a number of new students being registered—usually kids whose families moved from out of state over the summer and who didn’t check that school does not start after Labor Day here. You’d think people would check, but it happens every year without fail.
Deb, Diane disliked the procedures her Elementary School used to assign new students to classrooms. Since Diane was rated the highest in her Grade Level, the Principal would always assigned the new “challenging” students to her.
Jackie had that problem too! Any “bad” kid that other teachers couldn’t handle were given to Jackie. Sometimes she didnn’t mind, if the kid had a personality conflict with the other teacher, for example. Sometimes the problem was the other teacher was boring.
Jeff, one of the other teachers in Diane’s Grade Level would go to the Principal and cry–literally–until he took the “troubled” student out of her class…and put the student in Diane’s class. Very unfair!

Jackie used to have to go in to work the week of Labor Day. Teachers generally got a couple of days to prepare before the kids started, either Thursday or the following Monday, depending how early or late it was. She generally went in a couple of extra days, though. Now, who cares? After 18 years (!!) of retirement, let someone else worry about it.
George, we have been buying mini lemon cakes (they look like large muffins, with yummy icing) from Costco, which are delicious, but Diane’s sounds great. You sold Jackie on pizza today too.
Jeff, at long last, after years of promises, Western NY is finally getting a Costco. The ground was broken a couple weeks ago and now huge earthmoving machines are busy on the site. The nearest Costco to us used to be in St. Catherines, Canada. The Lemon Drizzle Cake recipe is another winner (we hope) from Hollywood’s cookbook, BAKE.
Ina Garten’s Lemon Drizzle cake is so good too! There’s fresh-squeezed lemon juice and lemon zest in the batter, with icing made of confectioner’s sugar and fresh lemon juice. You poke holes in the top of the cake while it’s still warm from the oven and use a pastry brush to cover the top and sides in icing. A perfect blend of sweet and tangy/tart. It always gets eaten up with a couple of days when I make it.
Deb, we may give Ina Garten’s Lemon Drizzle Cake a try next. Right now, we’re waiting for the three sticks of butter to soften up before we start. Diane also is busy packing my bag for BOUCHERCON in Minneapolis.

Yay! I’m sure you will love Costco if you join. These are a package of six lemon muffins/small cakes for $11.
We got a large Margherita pizza with roasted peppers, with half mushrooms for me. Yum.
Jeff, Diane intends on joining Costco. My sister in Tucson considers Costco to be the Best Store Ever! She buys just about everything there. There were rumors a decade ago that Costco was coming to Western NY. But it took 10 years to make it happen!
I tend to find Costco isn’t really less expensive than the other stores tend to be, for what I shop for, and of course the packaging by default is A Whole Lot..and the selection catch as catch can. But it can be useful, for all that. (I’ll rain on the rainy day.)
Todd, I’ve never bought anything at Costco so once the new store opens in Western NY it will be a New Buying Experience. I know our Sam’s Clubs and BJ’s Warehouses are worried.

How many people know why it’s called “Labor Day”? Very few probably, in inverse proportion to the many who assume the eight-hour working day, the five-day working week, the cessation of child labor, pensions, and paid leave were spontaneous gifts from the benevolent robber barons (then and now) of industry. As I recall, when I was in elementary school back in the Jurassic Age, the school year ended with Memorial Day and didn’t start till the Tuesday after Labor Day. By the time I entered junior high, the end of the school year was pushed ahead to the first week of June, but classes still began after Labor Day. This year my grandkids started school two weeks ago.
Fred, if the “experts” are correct, we’ll see schools shutting down again this Fall when the Covid-19 surge hits again. Diane and I plan to get our Omicron Booster shot in October. And, I just ordered another box of 50 N95 masks.
In Europe “Workers’ Day” has been the First of May for more than a hundred years. It also took a lot of hard work by the unions to get this realised – now almost every European country has it.
Enjoy your holiday!
The US had two Labor Days for a while, with our September one predating May Day. The successful attempt to choke out most of the anarchist to Leninist left in the US meant that May Day lost some popularity here.
It’s a “wonder” those thing stay restrained, George.
Have a great day avoiding mattress sales. Anything special planned for you and your bride?

Not a day we have ever celebrated but appreciated the day off when I worked.

Happy Labor Day, everyone!

Wolf, the Pandemic seems to have re-invigorated the Union movement in the U.S. Workers at STARBUCKS and WALMART are organizing.

Todd, somehow May Day evolved into Cinco de Mayo.
