Even though we just turned the page on 2024, I’m still living in the Past musically. Lost & Found In the Seventies from 2004 collects a blend of familiar songs–“Lovin’ You,” “Proud Mary,” “You’re No Good,” “American Pie”–with less well known songs. I was surprised that The Hollies were still making the charts with “The Air That I Breathe” in 1974–I always considered them a Sixties group.
Prom Night: This Magic Moment from 2008 includes Rock, Soul, and Pop songs in typical TIME-LIFE fashion. The Big Name groups are here: The Temptations, The Supremes, The Four Tops, and The Righteous Brothers. There are multiple songs by Brenda Lee, Lesley Gore, and Jay and The Americans. Do you remember these songs? Any favorites here? GRADE: B (for both)

Everything on both sets was at least a minor hit, unsurprisingly…including the annoying ones, such as “Brand New Key” and Blue Suede’s “Ooga-Ooga-Ooga-Shaka” cover of “Hooked on a Feeling”…the songs playing on my clock radio that awoke me for school or summer lawn-mowing in Hazardville in ’73-’76.
Unless, like Cream or the Zombies or that Liverpudlian band, they broke up in the ’60s, most ’60s hitmakers continued to chart into the ’70s along with the Hollies…consider the Kinks, the Who, the Stones, the Band, hell, the Beach Boys. And the Staples family, as well.
Todd, you’re right. Several groups who were successful in the Sixties had a few more hits in the Seventies.
The songs on the Prom Night set are much more memorable than my actual prom. As for the Lost & Found compilation, there are some songs I wish I could forget. The ones from The Staples Singers, Ike and Tina Turner, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jim Croce, Linda Ronstadt, and Don McLean are ones I’m glad I haven’t forgotten — most of the rest, meh.
Jerry, some of the songs on LOST & FOUND should have stayed lost…
Two fairly predictable compilations—and I daresay most of them got played at some school dance or another. The real surprise to me is the inclusion of “I’m on Fire” (not to be confused with the Springsteen song of the same title) by the Dwight Twilly Band. A rather obscure 70s rocker that I always liked. Sadly, Twilly died a year or so ago.
Deb, like you I’m always surprised when some quirky songs show up on these compilation CDs.
I agree that they’re odd mixes. DO I remember them? Well, 100% of the second set. Most of the first, but hardly all of them. Funny that they had both hit versions of “Hooked On a Feeling,” one on each collection. Actually, I’ve heard a lot of these on Sirius XM in the car lately, on the way down here and since we’ve been in Florida:
The More I See You
You Don’t Own Me
It’s My Party
Where The Boys Are
Lightning Strikes (every time I hear that, I think, “And now, former President Bill Clinton steps up to the mike” – )
My Girl
American Pie
Mr. Bojangles (yesterday)
Long live Mavis!
Jeff, I was surprised to learn that Bob Dylan proposed to Marvis and she turned him down!
I remember all the tracks on the Prom CD and most of those on the ’70s collection (but many of those only because they were also on the multi-volume “Have a Nice Day” ’70s CD set from Rhino Records). I would guess Joe South is little remembered today, but “Games People Play” was a big hit, as were two or three others that he wrote but charted for other performers.
Fred, I’m glad you gave a shout-out to Joe South, an artist who is mostly forgotten today, but a dynamic musical presence Back in the Day.
The Prom Night selections are VERY strange.
You Don’t Own Me – really???
Some of these might be better selections for a boozy night at the bar after a break-up.
But … I never went to a prom so what do I know? My senior year the principal called an assembly to berate our class for NOT buying tickets.
True, plus Jackie’s favorite, “What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted.” Nice prom choice!
Jeff, I share Jackie’s fondness for “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted.” Great song!
So many songs that I fondly remember – and some of the artists I had the chance to watch and hear until 2013!
Sometimes I even watch them on youtube – even if the sound quality is kind of horrible.
Fond memories!
Wolf, you’re right about the sound quality on much of YouTube…or lack thereof. The music of my youth still has a hold on me!
