Today is “Selection Sunday” on CBS where the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament determines the participating teams and their brackets. The matchups are always surprising and confounding. As an alumnus of Marquette University, I’ll be rooting for the Golden Eagles to go deep into the 2013 Tournament. What teams will you be rooting for?
Three guesses.
The coach of Michigan, John Beilein, is a Western NY native, Patti. When I’m not rooting for Marquette, I’m rooting for Michigan.
To be honest I’ve been paying even less attention than usual to college basketball this year. I will be rooting for the Big East not to embarrass themselves.
Syracuse ran out of gas last night, Jeff. Playing four games in four days will do that to you. Louisville looks like it’s peaking at just the right time.
I’ll be rooting for Oregon. You know, one of those western colleges no one ever heard of (like UCLA). The west gets no respect, all the focus is on the ACC, (recently deceased) Big East, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, and any other conference east of the Mississippi. I figure three Pac 12 teams will go: UCLA, Oregon, Arizona. I’ll be cheering on those last two. I also always like to see VCU win, because of their coach and program, and Gonzaga, even though they are #1, will be viewed as an underdog because of their low power rating. I’ll be pulling the bracket off the web tomorrow and will start watching Thursday, though I’m watching the ACC championship right now.
I’ve always liked Gonzaga, Rick. This year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament should be wide-open so Western schools have a good shot at making the Final Four.
I’m a Duke man myself. They didn’t do well in the tournament, but my other favorite team won today. My two favorite teams are Duke and whoever’s playing Carolina.
Everyone starts at zero in the Tournament, Randy. Duke might just get hot at the right time.
I don’t follow b-ball, but Rick’s comments generally echo mine. Gonzaga would be my first choice, I suppose.
I’m hoping Gonzaga reaches the Final Four, Bob.
I’ve been a Kansas fan ever since Bill Self took over, but this year I haven’t been as engaged because the people I used to do a work pool with are all gone so I’m not sure I’m going to be as obsessed with watching games as I have been in the past.
Kansas should do well in their next couple of games, Carl. Then it gets tough.
BAH. The Pac 12 got about as much respect as Dangerfield. The winner of the conference tournament is a 12 seed? What? There are 5 teams from P-12, which is more than I expected, but I think CO and Cal will fall early, and UCLA lost a star player with a broken foot. AZ and OR are the only teams with a chance at even the sweet 16. I figure Louisville, Kansas, Indiana in the final four.
We’ll see…
Everyone likes Louisville, Rick. But I’m guessing some Bracket Busters are lurking…
Louisville is definitely the favorite of the moment – defense wins – but it’s a long way to the Final Four.
