I picked up this DVD set at BJ’s Warehouse for $7.99. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), The Seven Year Itch (1955), and Some Like It Hot (1959) look great on these DVDs. Marilyn Monroe dominated the decade of the Fifties. Of course, the fame took a personal toll on the actress. But these four movies show a star at the prime of her career. If you’re a Marilyn Monroe fan, pick up this bargain set! What’s your favorite Marilyn Monroe movie?
Some Like It Hot, though her part in The Asphalt Jungle was better, but too brief.
Bob, you’re right about Marilyn’s role in THE ASPHALT JUNGLE.
My favorite is THE MISFITS, but I have to say she was better-suited to Comedy.
Dan, you’re right about Marilyn’s comedic talent.
SOME LIKE IT HOT–although she was playing the sexy blonde stereotype, Billy Wilder and the actors around her made it work for her. I also like her in THE MISFITS, especially the first half (before the movie goes way over- the- top in sentimentality and symbolism).
Deb, SOME LIKE IT HOT was a defining movie for Marilyn. But, as you point out, it also stereotyped her for the rest of her career.
George, I might have seen just one Marilyn Monroe film, probably “The Seven Year Itch.” I’m not sure. For some reason I never took to her as I did many actresses of her era.
Prashant, you should try SOME LIKE IT HOT. You will get the full “Marilyn Effect” watching that movie.
Some Like It Hot
The Seven Year Itch
I also liked her brief appearances in one of my favorite movies, ALL ABOUT EVE, where she played “Miss Casswell,” a “graduate of the Copacabana School of Dramatic Arts.” She was pretty funny.
I should also mention her demented turn in DON’T BOTHER TO KNOCK.
Jeff, ALL ABOUT EVE is an underrated movie. And, Marilyn showed off her comic chops in that “Miss Casswell” role.
Nothing compares to SOME LIKE IT HOT for me.
Patti, I totally agree with you. SOME LIKE IT HOT took Marilyn to a New Level.
I’m not a fan, but if you forced me to watch one of her films, it would be The Misfits. Of the four on your set, I’d probably watch The Seven Year Itch, for Ewell’s performance.
Rick, THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH was the first Marilyn Monroe movie I ever saw. She knocked me out!
I decent round up of osme fo her best films, no question about it, though BUST STOP and THE MISFITS probably contain the performances by her I prize the most.
Sergio, there are several Marilyn Monroe packages available. This four-DVD collection hit my “sweet spot” being priced at $7.99. That’s less than $2 a movie!
