Roald Dahl’s classic book, Matilda, the story of a brilliant young girl who is mistreated by her narcissistic parents, transforms into a high-energy play in Matilda, The Musical. I was impressed with the performance of little Gabby Gutierrez as Matilda. She delivers a spunky rendition of a brave girl trying to overcome the cruel forces around her. Matilda’s parents send her to a wretched school run by the imperious Agatha Trunchbull who rules her students by force. Bryce Ryness is terrific as the hideous Head Master. My main complaint about Matilda, The Musical is the music. Yes, it’s loud and energetic, but not very memorable. I’d recommend this play for the story, but it needs better music. GRADE: B
Saw this on stage in London with my nieces (who were 9 at the time) – had a fantastic time – Minchin really is a very smart cookie!
Sergio, there were plenty of kids at the performance of MATILDA, THE MUSICAL that we saw. The audience gave the cast a standing ovation at the end of the play.
It is a rare musical that has memorable songs now. The best and brightest musicians do not write for Broadway alas.
Patti, there was plenty of energy and dancing on the stage of MATILDA, THE MUSICAL. The kids in the cast did a great job. But the music–laud and raucous–was very forgettable.
That was the main complaint in the NY Times review of the newly opened ALLEGIANCE too – generic, unmemorable songs.
We still have MATILDA on our list to see. It looks like a fun show.
Jeff, the cast of MATILDA, THE MUSICAL sings and dances their hearts out. But, musically, they don’t have much to work with.
Allegiance premiered here in SD and I didn’t see it (sort of like Jersey boys, still haven’t seen that and hunchback of notre dame ) Our paper is raving about it due to the San Diego Connection It didn’t sound interesting to me, as I tend not to like dramas that much. I used to think musicals were all happy, then I saw whistle down the wind in London If I’d been alone, would have left at the intermission
Maggie, you will really like JERSEY BOYS when you finally see it.
I only recently read Matilda – and loved it.
I’d probably steer clear of the play, if only because it will attract lots of kids.
Our local cable station will soon be offering Broadway on HD. That could be a very good investment.
Beth, Diane read MATILDA to her classes for many years. I love all of Roald Dahl’s work. And I’d sign up for that BROADWAY in HD package!
So with unremarkable music in the musical, the thing to do is…read the book. Which I have done, one years ago and again a couple of years ago.
Rick, going into MATILDA, THE MUSICAL we didn’t know anything about the quality (or lack thereof) of the music.
George, I’d love to see the musical, especially since I enjoyed both the book and the movie.
Prashant, I don’t know if a touring company of MATILDA, THE MUSICAL will be coming your way but if it does the play is worth a look…and a listen.
