I’ve seen most of Alfred Hitchcock’s movies and music plays a key role in many of them. I have a half dozen soundtracks from some of the major Hitchcock films, but I enjoyed this new collection of music from the major composers: Bernard Herrmann, Arthur Benjamin, Dimitri Tiomkin, Danny Elfman, and Franz Waxman. If you’re a Hitchcock fan you’ll enjoy this music. What’s your favorite Hitchcock film? I have to go with Rear Window.
Psycho is my favorite. North by Northwest is the most fun. Always had a fondness for Strangers on a Train.
Steve, those are great films! I agree that NORTH BY NORTHWEST is the most fun.
North by Northwest
Jeff, MOUNT RUSHMORE was never the same after NORTH BY MORTHWEST!
REAR WINDOW for me with VERTIGO a close second. I love them all though.
Love the music. This is a great CD
Patti, I’m a big fan of VERTIGO, too. And Hitchcock’s music is always compelling.
Don’t have a favorite Hitchcock–I like different ones for different reasons. I will say that REAR WINDOW is probably the Ultimate Movie, in the way it captures the viewing experience and makes the spectator the hero. I still remember sitting in a crowded theater and hearing everyone gasp in horror as Raymond Burr looked into the camera.
Dan, I gasped when Raymond Burr looked into the camera, too!
I love how Danny Elfman (another in a series of men who should have married me if only they’d ever met me, back in the day) has morphed in 25 years from leading Oingo Boingo to becoming one of the pre-eminent movie/TV soundtrack and score composers of our day. This CD looks great, but suddenly I feel very, very old!
Deb, you obviously have great taste in men! You’re right about Danny Elfman’s career. Every time I watch an episode of THE SIMPSONS I hear Elfman’s famous theme.
As for favorite Hitchcock movies, I’ll go with Marnie, which is more low-key than standard Hitchcock and has a rather downbeat and ambiguous ending.
Deb, MARNIE is an interesting choice. It’s definitely an unappreciated movie.
I’m a sucker for complications like these of film music done by orchestras. I may have to get this.
Rick, I’m a sucker for film music CDs, too! I’ll be posting more about them in the weeks ahead.
Careful, Deb. Elfman is a Scientologist and he’d recruit you into the cult before you can say “where’s my checkbbok?”
I liked some of Hitch’s older films, like Foreign Correspondent or The 39 Steps.
I didn’t know that about Danny Elfman. I always thought he was a nice Jewish boy. I knew Jenna Elfman (his sister-in-law?) was a Scientologist, but I thought Danny had more brains than that. Jeez, way to break my crush, Cap’n!
