In hopes of finding those Louise Penny books that Rick and Carl have raved about, I took a drive over the Border to Canada’s biggest bookstore, The Book Depot, in St. Catherines. I’ve taken Patti Abbott and her husband, Phil, to this massive warehouse filled with thousands of remaindered books. I found two Pennys, and several more books. I bought some duplicates for friends. This whole order came to a mere $93. A pittance considering these are all like-new hardcovers. If you’d like to check out The Book Depot web site, just click here.
We went there with the Abbotts at your direction last year. They also have very cheap greeting cards which Jackie stocked up on.
I try to make it over to Canada every couple months, Jeff. THE BOOK DEPOT is always a bargain!
Of course, the Hagberg book you need to look out for is CROC (written as by “David James”). I picked up copies years ago in Britain and at a long ago Bouchercon Hagberg was taken aback (to say the least) when Bill Crider and I approached him to praise it and get him to sign Bill’s copy. As soon as he realized we were fans and not making fun of it he seemed pleased at the attention.
I think I gave CROC to SUNY at Buffalo, Jeff.
Although they put out their share of risible crap, a fair number Belmont/Tower books were surprisingly well-written and entertaining. Some enjoyable covers, too.
I agree, Drongo. People underestimate the quality of books from fringe publishers. Of course they published a lot of crap, too.
If you’re going to read any Penny books, George, you need to read them in order. They are almost all available in paperback, and the ones that aren’t, you just bought. Start with STILL LIFE and go from there.
Hope you’re enjoying BOUCHERCON!!
We’re loving BOUCHERCON, Rick. I just enjoyed a panel with F. Paul Wilson on it. I need to read more of his stuff. I usually try to read an author’s works in order. I just bought a signed First Edition of STILL LIFE.
