Diane wanted a new kitchen set so we shopped around and settled on this Bassett Studio B table and chairs. We went with the Guilford (a warm sandy color) instead of this Safari color so just imagine the picture above with those alterations. The chairs will be a Java (coffee color) hue. The top contender was the Paula Deen River House table and chairs. The price for both sets were about the same, but Baasett gave us more options and I preferred the cleaner design. Bassett was also having a sale so we saved a couple hundred dollars. Are you in the market for new furniture?
Nice-looking table! I want a tall but not deep bookshelf to replace my bedside table, between the bed and the wall! This place is pretty cramped so the only direction for expansion is up!
Bob, I always need more shelving but Diane has an embargo in place.
This really looks nice, George – congratulations to you and your wife!
We Europeans usually associate American furniture with shiny plastics, thrown away again after a few years, but of course I know that you have good quality stuff too …
What kind of wood are these things made of?
I’m a fan of real wood, but it’s become very expensive her, so I’ve taken to buying stuff from pine/fir. It’s light brown/yellowish colour lightens up a darker room!
And also the stuff is relatively cheap, in modular form – packages which you mount/screw together yourself. That was very convenient when I bought my holiday home here in Hungary – on every journey there were two or three packages with some new stuff …
Wolf, Bassett offers 28 different options on the type of finishes on their oak tables. And Bassett furniture is built in the U.S. A lot of furniture for sale here is imported from China.
Real oak, grown and born in the USA -surely not cheap.
One of my relatives just had his 70 years old walnut tree felled – and the trunk/stem was taken by his grandson as payment …
So you’re really old school, using real wood, George!
Wolf, I prefer real wood. Yes, it is more expensive. But other wood furniture we’ve bought over the years have held up over time. But the furniture stores here feature plenty of inexpensive Chinese-made furniture. I’m just not impressed with their quality.
Very nice! You’ll have to post a picture of your actual furniture when it arrives and you get it placed the way you want it.
We got two new pieces of furniture for our den a few months back–matching sofa and loveseat in a cream-colored leather. After looking at a number of options and brands, we went with a product from Best Homes which is based in Indiana. Now that our kids are grown, we no longer have to worry about messy hands and things like Play-Doh–but, of course, first thing someone dropped a pen (with the cap off) on it. We quickly learned how to clean stains from leather.
We’re still looking for end tables and a large coffee table. We’re still using our old stuff, but we’re going to try to get new items picked out this summer.
Deb, I’ll be sure to post a picture of the new Bassett kitchen set when it arrives. We’ve been told it takes about a month. Yesterday, we generated an order for the kitchen set. Next week, Bassett will start building it. You’re smart to focus on particular pieces like end tables. You have plenty of great choices!
Looks good!
What time should we show up?
Dan, our dining plans are unclear, but our door is always open to DAPA-EMers!
Way to stimulate the economy!
Too bad you didn’t think of this in Raleigh. We could have driven you to one of the many furniture places there.
No on the new furniture here, though we did replace our 25 year old main air conditioner. The super rebuilt the window it was in, in the dining room next to the kitchen, and they will install it for us in due course.
Jeff, I’m with you: A/C is a top priority! Our new kitchen set might be built in North Carolina or Virginia. Bassett has two big lumber mills in those states.
Very nice. I don’t need much in the way of furniture I would like to get a double bed headboard with a bookcase on top. I remember reading a Margaret Maron book where she did furniture shopping in NC.
My dad made a lot of my furniture. I’d seen a picture in a mag like sunset of a butcher block table. Dad made me one and before I could buy the ladderback chairs I wanted to go with them, he’d made 4 chairs. The chairs aren’t very comfortable, but couldn’t hurt his feelings. He then custom made a matching china cabinet in the corner of the room, with a secret hiding place. He also made dressers, desks, and lots of bookcases.
Cap’n, Deb: too bad you don’t live close to me I have a beautiful coffee table with matching end tables and bookcases available.
Maggie, we have too much furniture, too. Diane will offer our old kitchen set to Patrick and Katie first, and then move down the list of relatives and friends until someone comes over and picks it up.
Jackie didn’t want to be left out so decided she couldn’t go one more day without ordering a new white microwave to match the kitchen. She found the one she wanted on Amazon (where else?) reduced from $191 to $79.
The Maron book was what I thought of with the furniture. They probably don’t go to Western NY, but once the weather gets warmer we’ll start to see big trucks from some of the North Carolina furniture places. They bring truckloads up to Brooklyn (and, presumably, other areas) and sell them at really good prices.
Jeff, we have a CAROLINA FURNITURE store that specializes in North Carolina built kitchen sets, couches, bedroom sets, dining room sets, etc. Diane checked out seven furniture stores before she took me out to see her two favorite choices. Both the Paula Deen River House kitchen set or the Bassett Studio B set would have worked for Diane. I just influenced the buying decision slightly.
Very Country. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
Rick, we were into country before country became cool.
We are buying carpeting. The house is on a slab and hardwood is very difficult. THought a lot about tile but we already have a lot of slate so thought carpet would be a soft change.
Patti, we have carpeting in our living room. Very comfy on our feet! And warm in the Winter!
