NEW WINDOWS

windows
In our unending quest to stimulate the American Economy, Diane and I contracted with a local company to replace 15 windows in our house. This is the same crew that installed the new vinyl siding and windows on the front of our house last summer. You can see how they did here. We liked the Seaway windows with their high insulation factors and appearance. They’re easy to open and close. Plus the company offered us a 30% discount on the project (to keep their crews busy during the winter months). We saved over $5,000. Are you planning any home improvements?

I may pick up some old broken lawn ornaments from the yard & throw them away. Or I may not. Does that count?

Dan, if you have any copies of NADA stored away, this is the time to break them out! Not many books on AMAZON are priced at $2000!

    Very nice!

While I would love to completely gut and redo both bathrooms, the kitchen, and the laundry room, with two kids entering college in the fall, unless we win the lottery (or find an unexpected $100,000 under the couch cushions), I’m afraid we’ll be living with the old stuff for a while longer.

Deb, we used to go room by room with home improvements depending on our budget. Yes, those College tuition bills constrain things.

Nice look! They should give you a lot more visibility.

While we’re away the super is doing a couple of things for Jackie, including repairing the living room /dining room window frame where he took out the old air conditioner, and making it ready to take Jackie’s new one (currently sitting in the den) this Spring., The painter is cleaning up some mess in the bedroom caused by leaks from the outside, as they have finally been re-pointing the bricks on the whole place. A new roof is supposed to follow.

No other home improvement plans, unless you count the new laptop we bought down here. We’ll be adding Netflix to the new television we bought before we left, and probably getting Amazon Prime as well.

Can’t let George and Diane get too far ahead!

Jeff, I like Netflix and AMAZON Prime Video. I’m sure you and Jackie will enjoy the improvements when you return home.

I am hoping to put new flooring in. Everywhere. Not sure what we will be able to do on a concrete slab yet. It all depends on how much I can get from selling a diamond ring of my grandmother’s. We did quite a lot last year with a new kitchen, painting, removing dead trees. And I just bought a new mattress. Hope we like the memory foam. Phil is convinced I will be too hot on it. We’ll see. We were lucky to send our kids off to college when I was forty so those costs are long behind us.

Ahem. I think maybe “being sold” is a misstatement; “being offered” is closer to the mark. And those charitable, delusional folks at Goodwill Industries of San Diego have the immortal gall to charge $3.99 shipping!

Art, it was great talking with you yesterday! I ordered a couple of those British Crime Library volumes that POISONED PEN PRESS is distrusting. I wanted to order that Lam & Cool book but they’re not accepting advanced orders yet. And I investigated that “other matter” we spoke about…WOW!

George, those windows look lovely – like from an aristocrat’s castle …

And of course insulation is a good thing for the environment, even if your energy prices in the USA are much smaller than over here in Europe.

    PS:
How old were the “old” windows?
My house in Hungary was rebuilt around 15 years ago to modern standards and those should be enough for the rest of our lives – though of course people will tell you, everything could be better. Right now some people in Germany build “zero energy houses” – they are so well insulated that you have to use heat pumps to get fresh air in, either cool or warm, depending on the situation.

Wolf, our old Andersen windows were 28 years old. We were going to wait until 2017 to replace the windows, but the discount swayed us to move up the window replacement.

We’ll replace two interior doors one of these days! I’m waiting for better weather so I can paint them first! Your windows really spruce up the manor!

    What is Art mumbling about?!

Nice Windows. I will get a new fridge and water heater in the next year or so. I’d love to get a big fridge, but due to this being an old house, there is a limited space, with outer wall on one side and cabinets etc on the other. On the outside wall behind the fridge space is a door, presumably for fridge repairs. I’ve nailed it shut.

I have a floor to 6.5 feet lazy susan on the other side of the kitchen I think it was intended as a cooling area. It’s not space efficient, and I’d love to replace it and put in shelving that pulls out. It’s too small a job for a contractor, and I’ve not found a reliable handyman. sigh.

Maggie, all of our appliances are due to die. With the next few years we’ll need a few stove, fridge, dishwasher, and microwave.

Kitty tiled the from hallway yesterday. She’s the ambitious one. For my part, I remembered to shave last week.
