    George, thanks from me too!

Here in Europe speculations about the terrorists abound and there’s a (some times very ugly …) discussion going on – but I’m still hoping that in the end sanity will rule.

Terrorism has always been a part of human history – I wonder why. What makes these people act?

Wolf, I think the world has a mental health crisis. Unstable individuals are pawns of political and religious movements…with disastrous results.

I never get tired of looking at Niagara Falls, and though the picture is nothing like the power of the real thing it is good to see,

Here in New York they did an amazing job lighting the very top of 1 World Trade with the French tricolor as well. We were in the city yesterday and there was a heavy – and heavily armed – police presence reminiscent of the days after 9/11.

If only loudmouth politicians and would-be politicians (Trump) and idiot commentators would think first and talk later (never would be better), and moronic actors (Rob Lowe) wouldn’t feel the need to share every thought (sic) it might help.

Thanks, George. That display is moving. Jeff, I blessedly didn’t hear any thoughts from Rob Lowe or trump. I did see the tribute given in the opening of SNL. It was moving as well. Our paper ran something with the headline that it was Obama’s fault. I didn’t read the article. It seems to me that religions have always been intolerant of each other, going back at least to the crusades. Sad, when we should be clinging to the golden rule.

Jeff, all the supportive tributes are nice, but we need to prepare for the next attack. The latest ISIS video calls for terrorism in Washington, D.C.

George, that must have been wonderful!
How often did you go to have a look at the falls? And what did you feel? Was it like, oh well, I’ve seen them – nothing spectacular anymore?

PS and not too much OT:
Like you many others honour the dead in Paris – George R R Martin put the “Tricolore” on his website. http://grrm.livejournal.com/

We’d been to the falls 3-4 times and it is just mesmerizing to stand there and watch the water rush over and down. And you can walk under the falls or take a boat ride on the Maid of the Mist.

Jeff, we were there in March (on the Canadian side we got a hotel room overlooking the falls – including a jacuzzi and a fire place for almost nothing …) and it was unbelievably beautiful!
My wife who lived more than 40 years under communism in Hungary wept – she had never thought to ever get to see this nature’s spectacle!
      We’ll always remember this …

The Noir at the Bar reading in Manhattan last night was a block away from Washington Park. The arch there was lit up with the French colors and people had been leaving candles and signing posters on the ground beneath it. Lots of people, musicians, etc. And when you turned around you could see the World Trade Center and its lights, too. One of the street vendors in midtown said I looked French and told me his heart was broken and he held up his cell phone and showed me a tribute picture. He said more, but I could only understand part of what he was saying. My son was a little disturbed by the extra police and their weapons but he relaxed when I pointed out that they were all smiling and hanging around, not getting ready to go into immediate action. I said he could go talk to them but he didn’t want to get that close. But Paris was clearly on everyone’s mind. That part of it, at least, was good to see.

Rick, these attacks are part of a larger strategy that includes the bomb on the Russian passenger jet, the bombing in Beirut, and now the shootings in Paris. We need to prepare for the next move.
