What We Talk About When We Talk About Books:The History and Future of Reading explores the history of books and the challenges books face today in a time filled with movies, podcasts, TV on demand, and video games.

Leah Price points out sales of ebooks have fallen in recent years. Sales of “real” books exceed ebook sales by $100 million. And sales of audio books continue to rise. The book is far from dead but Price cites statistics that many Americans don’t read books–real books or ebooks–anymore. A smaller segment of people read MORE books which explains the sales figures. A mysterious villain manages to manipulate The Joker, the Riddler, Bane, and Poison Ivy into making attacks on Batman. But, the heart of BATMAN HUSH is the relationship between Catwoman and Batman. Yes, it takes a romantic turn. I’m a fan of these DC Animated movies so factor that into your assessment of my review of BATMAN HUSH. Are you a Catwoman fan? GRADE: B+

A Quiet Place 2 is a sequel to the 2018 horror hit movie. John Krasinski will star and direct the movie as he did with the original. From the press releases I’ve read, Krasinski’s wife and star, Emily Blunt, will return to participate in the sequel. Film crews have been seen in Oclott, Akron, and North Tonawanda! This project will certainly help the local Western New York economy: “NY State officals say the film is expected to hire more than 400 people in the Western New York area and invest more than $10 million into the regional economy.”

Are any movies being filmed near you?

In his excellent review of Lady in the Lake in the New York Times Book Review (you can read it here), Stephen King compares Laura Lippman to Ruth Rendell. Both writers produced character-based mysteries that draw the reader into the story.

Laura Lippman’s Lady in the Lake focuses on Madeline “Maddie” Schwartz, a woman who leaves her comfortable middle-class life and struggles to become a journalist in a male-oriented profession. Lady in the Lake takes place between October 1966 and November 1967 in Baltimore. Maddie starts her journalistic career as a go-for at a Baltimore newspaper, The Star. But she becomes fascinated by the death of a missing woman whose body was discovered in the fountain of a city park lake. Little by little, Maddie learns how to investigate a crime and how to write in newspaper format. Laura Lippman enriches her novel with chapters narrated by a jewelry store clerk, a troubled waitress, a star player on the Baltimore Orioles, a Baltimore cop, a veteran female reporter, and the ghost of the victim which provide both detail and context.

Lady in the Lake captures the sense of change of the Sixties and the roles women in America. GRADE: B

I’m fond of the annual mystery anthologies that collect short stories from Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine. Ellery Queen’s Grand Slam: 25th Annual Mystery Anthology (World Publishing, 1970) features several excellent short stories. The anthology starts off with three clever Ed Hoch stories. I’m a fan of stories about con men so Berkely Mather’s humorous “For Want of a Nail” tickled my funny bone with its memorable ending.

George Simenon’s “Inspector Maigret Hesitates” delivers a sinister tale. I’m a fan of Michael Gilbert’s Calder and Behrens stories of counterespionage and treachery so of course I found “The One-to-Ten Affair” a delight. Ellery Queen’s Grand Slam with 25 very enjoyable stories should delight you, too! GRADE: A

I found these Motown compilations at a Library Book Sale. They cost me a dime each! All of the songs included on these CDs were #1 hits for Motown. All the major singers are represented: The Temptations, Four Tops, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, the Commodores (with Lionel Richie), Marvin Gaye, and Rick James. Based on Maria Semple’s 2012 novel of the same name, Richard Linklater’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette tells the story of a genius who goes off the rails. Cate Blanchett plays Bernadette Fox, a brilliant woman who achieves fame in the architectural field. But a series of reversals sends Bernadette into seclusion for 20 years in an a leaky old home in Seattle. Bernadette’s loving but preoccupied husband (played by Bill Crudup), Elgin, retreats into his work at Microsoft. The only person who truly reaches Bernadette is her smart and caring teenage daughter (played by Emma Nelson), Bee.

As a director, Richard Linklater seems willing to roll the dice to get to the heart of a story. He did it in his Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight series, in the astonishing Boyhood, and the sparkling Me and Orson Welles. In Where’d You Go, Bernadette Linklater trusts Cate Blanchett to fully project her character’s manic zaniness as everyone around her reacts with shock and disbelief to her antics. I liked Kristen Wiig as Bernadette’s neighbor, Lawrence Fishburne as Bernadette’s mentor, and Troian Bellisario as Bernadette’s enabler. If you’re in the mood for a moving movie experience, I highly recommend Where’d You Go, Bernadette. Are you a Cate Blanchett fan? GRADE: A

My daughter Katie idolizes Ruth Bader Ginsburg so when rumors that RBG was coming to Buffalo to speak swirled around this Summer, Katie contacted her lawyer friend, Michelle, to investigate. Michelle did better than that, she managed to score TWO tickets to the Ruth Bader Ginsburg event! The sold-out RBG extravaganza is being held today at Kleinhans Music Hall (2400 seats) which is home to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Ruth Bader Ginsburg just completed three weeks of radiation treatment for pancreatic cancer. I was surprised RBG kept this trip on her busy schedule…but she did!

When you read this, Diane and I will be driving to the Buffalo Airport to pick up Katie who is flying in from Boston. Katie and Michele will travel to the RBG event together. With the Supreme Court hanging in the balance, Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s heath grows in importance. Are you a fan of RBG?
