Political Animals on USA Network ends its six-episode run tonight. I, of course, love Sigourney Weaver as Secretary of State. I also like Carla Gugino as the ambitious newspaper columnist. But there’s plenty I don’t like. I don’t like Sigourney’s gay, drug-addicted son. And, I’m not so fond of her straight-arrow son, either. Sigourney’s ex-husband, based on Bill Clinton, steals scenes sometimes and goofs up the action of the plot at other times. I’m not sure if this series will be continued. And, if it is continued, I don’t know if I would watch it unless Major Changes take place. But, as TV summer filler, Political Animals was worth watching.
We bailed after two episodes. A real disappointment.
POLITICAL ANIMALS got soapy in a hurry, Patti. If they’d stayed with the political maneuvering it would have held up better. Playing the soap opera card drove plenty of viewers away.
The last episode was much better because the son was unconscious the whole show.
And you didn’t mention the highlight of every episode, the wonderful Ellen Bustyn as Sigourney’s down to earth and incredibly sharp mother. She alone would make me watch no matter how much time they waste on the sons.
You’re right, Jeff. If the writers had played up the interaction of Sigourney and Ellen Bustyn, they could have created great drama (and humor).
Too much political maneuvering on he news, I have no need to watch fictionalized versions of it. Bah!
The real political maneuvering is too lame, Rick. The fictional sort, when done well, is more fun.
Well, I must say that I saw that coming. (WARNING – DO NOT READ BEFORE WATCHING) As soon as she made peace with the President and he got on Air Force One after kissing his wife and child goodbye I said, “That’s it. He’s dead, The plane is going down.” I’ve seen too much television and read too many mysteries. (END WARNING)
I’m not sure if this deserves a second season, but I suppose there are a lot worse things on television.
Great minds think alike, Jeff. Diane came to the same conclusion you did (on similar evidence and logic). I would watch POLITICAL ANIMALS next season if both of Sigourney Weaver’s sons disappear from the series.
