The Postate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test was developed right here in Buffalo, NY at the Roswell Cancer Center. It remains the best test to predict prostate cancer in men, despite its flaws (false positives, false negatives, etc.). A PSA score of 4.0 and under is considered normal. I’ve been getting PSA tests yearly for the past 12 years. October or November has been the time I usually get a script for PSA blood work. Last week I went in and had blood drawn and this week I received the results. My PSA score is 1.0. For the past dozen years, my PSA score has been right around 1.0, give or take a couple tenths of a point. I attribute this nice low score to eating plenty of pizza. The lycopene in the pizza sauce seems to protect the prostate. So guys, order a pizza tonight because it’s healthy! And don’t forget your yearly PSA test!
And they just discovered a new positive of tomatoes this week. Can’t remember what though. Wonder what food will help me with that.
Pizza and spaghetti (with rich marinara sauce) are staples on the Kelley dinner table, Patti.
Great news! Too many men shy away from the PSA for all of the reasons you’ve mentioned, but I think it should be routine for men in the way mammograms are routine for women after the age of 40: Just one more thing to be sure all is well–and, if it’s not, catch and treat it early.
I’ll refrain from discussing your model–except to wish that she was wearing a bit more (or even any) underwear.
It’s not easy to find a nurse with a syringe photo on the Internet, Deb. I didn’t have time to Photoshop some panties on her. Yes, too many men fear the results of a PSA test. But early detection gives doctors plenty of treatment choices. In the NY TIMES last Sunday there was a story about a guy with a PSA score of 1100! I was shocked! I didn’t think the score went that high. The guy was without health insurance so he skipped getting his yearly PSA for a couple of years. Then, his health started to fail and he discovered he was riddled with cancer. Sad.
You should have asked Stilwell to “borrow” one of his nurses’ pictures.
I read the followup to that article, George. Kristof’s friend with the cancer died last week.
I’m very impressed with your PSA score. Mine is higher than yours but still in the good range. I guess I’ll have to up my pizza intake, although thanks to Jackie it is on our regular menu already.
I had little doubt about the fate of Kristof’s friend with the 1100 PSA score, Jeff. What’s tragic is that it could have been prevented. I highly recommend you up your pizza consumption!
My diet isn’t that healthy–I had Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups for breakfst this morning– but I am quite a fan of pizza and spaghetti sauce, and use both on all sorts of food. They go well with a lot of things.
If the above photo is any indication, the U.S. health care system is finally moving in the right direction.
I’ve been known to eat a granola bar for breakfast, Drongo, but not Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. And Mitt wants to repeal ObamaCare!
And congrats on your splendidly low PSA score, George.
Just keep eating that pizza, Drongo, and you’ll have good PSA scores, too!
I’m glad to read of your great score, George! My last PSA test, last Summer, resulted in a 1.4, which is just fine, though not as good as yours. I obviously don’t eat enough pizza. I’ll be telling the wife about this today!
I doubt Stillwell’s nurses would be wearing more underwear this this model, they just wouldn’t have the needle or the black cross.
A 1.4 PSA score is very good, Rick. You want to keep it below 4.0. Pizza once a week is my prescription!
There are those who are insisting that nicotine is what will help us all with the ravages of age on the brain. Hmf. Though if there’s any good that can come of that addiction and its own ravages, it’s about time.
Well, as cheesecake portrayals go…she is wearing a corset, after all…that’s underwear even when it is outerwear…and enough face paint to get her to keep her head warm in some climates…(I prefer the aspect of women without either, but I’m funny that way).
Continued good luck. It’s past time I started investigating mine regularly.
The PSA is a simple blood test, Todd. I urge you to monitor you score each year. A sharp increase in the number is cause for alarm.
Indeed. And Mittens, btw, wants to roll back RomneyCare. Except when he doesn’t. Hope you catch the small party debate tonight…and hope it will be lively.
I’m not sure many people watched the Third Debate, Todd. Election (and Debate) fatigue has set in. I’m sure over 95% of voters know who they want to vote for by now.
But, at least, the Fourth Debate, tonight, which includes the candidate (Jill Stein) I’ll be voting for, will have a nice slice through the political spectrum, rather than two guys trying to not agree about somewhere between 50 and 90% of their policies.
On C-SPAN, Link TV, Al Jazeera English and RT (Russia Today) at 8:55 p ET, tonight as well as streaming on Ora.tv (the host of moderator Larry King’s retirement show) and a number of other services. Dr. Jill Stein (Green), Gov. Gary Johnson (Libertarian), US Rep. Virgil Goode (Constitution) and Mayor Rocky Anderson (Justice). Some of the other folks running for president.
Sadly, the political game in the U.S. is fixed for a two-party system, Todd. A genuine, viable third party would improve our choices.
I’d guess over 90% if not 95% knew who they’d pull the lever for (hit the button or the puncher for) before the first debate…
The Debates seem to reinforce opinions about the candidates rather than to change any minds, Todd.
Oh…yeah…RT, at least, always has conventionally pretty women on camera as much as possible. Something I should’ve mentioned (a trio is anchoring/punditing, with a male colleague on site) for you, George…
