The reclusive Romanian-born pianist, Radu Lupu, played a brilliant program for an enthusiastic audience at the Ramsi Tick Concert Series. Lupu opened with Janacek’s “In the Mist.” Very atmospheric. Then Lupu tackled the stormy “Appassionata” Sonata by Beethoven. After the Intermission, Lupu closed with Schubert’s sublime Sonata in B-flat, D. 960. If Radu Lupu is performing in your area, you should go listen to his wonderful piano playing! Or pick up one of Lupu’s fine recordings.

The Real Radu Lupu who performed last night had a lot more white hair than the guy on that album cover, Jeff. I’ll watch my tape of 24 tonight. And then I’ll read Dave Barry’s blog.
I love the piano. It’s my favorite instrument, bar none. Phil prefers the cello. It actually seems to influence the music we prefer a lot.
You would like Radu Lupu, Patti. Great pianist! How these pianists can play nearly two hours of music FROM MEMORY always astonishes me.
Now, I have never seen a guest pianist play that long at the DSO. They bring them out for one piece only. You’re lucky to get 20 minutes.
That’s why I prefer piano recitals, Patti. The pianists play more music, and I love solo piano! But I’m always amazed that these artists can play THOUSANDS of notes from memory. I have trouble remembering what I had for breakfast!

When I saw Stanislov Richter play at the Music Center in L.A. many years ago, he was on stage for over 50 minutes.
I like Lupu and have some CDs with him playing. Sounds like a good time George.
Lupu would have to dye his hair to cover all the white if he wanted to pass himself off as Snape, Rick! I always enjoy a polished pianist playing challenging music. The audience gave Lupu two standing ovations, but he didn’t play an encore.
