ROMANCING THE STONE [Blu-ray]

Romancing the Stone (1984) features the hot Kathleen Turner and the then hunky Michael Douglas. Kathleen Turner plays a novelist who ends up in Columbia and finds herself in a treasure hunt with Michael Douglas. I loved this movie when I first saw it almost 30 years ago. It’s Indiana Jones-lite. But in my quest to replace all of my favorite DVDs with Blu-rays, who could pass up a $5.00 copy of Romancing the Stone in Blu-ray at Wal-Mart? The sequel, Jewel of the Nile sucks.

I didn’t hate JEWEL…but the two do tend to run together in my mind. I’d buy that for a fiver, too…Indiana Jones unponderous, too, though.

Good choice, George. I haven’t seen this is years but still remember it fondly. JEWEL was, as so many sequels are, a major disappointment.

You’re right about “major disappointment,” Jeff. JEWEL OF THE NILE killed any hopes of a long-running series.

I had a big grin on my face, too, Patti, while watching ROMANCING THE STONE. When I watched JEWEL OF THE NILE I was frowning.

Watched this as a kid. All I remember is the drug lord saying that he has a favorite pig, which seemed hilarious to me.

    A remake is in development.

Sounds well worth getting – a great looking movie too (Dean Cundey was the DP if I recall) and also has that wonderful overture from HOW THE WEST WAS WON by Alfred Newman in the pre-title sequence. Great stuff.

I can’t stand Michael Douglas, but the film is so good-hearted and Kathleen Turner is so much fun that I’ll watch it if it comes on unexpectedly. There’s apparently a remake in the works — or has been. No news since last year so who knows, could be in development hell. I know a lot of romance writers who just adore the film.

I was never a big Micahel Douglas fan, either, Kate. But Kathleen Turner is perfect in this film. I hadn’t heard about the remake, but I’d probably go see it.

I’ve had this on blu for awhile, think I bought it during one of the Black Friday sales. Love the scene where the local drug lord takes them on a tour of his town in his ‘little mule’.

I’m only replacing key films on blu-ray. Mostly Disney animation and I’m waiting for Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I mostly rent blu-rays from Netflix. At my age I want to start getting rid of stuff, not acquiring more.

I know Diane doesn’t believe it, but I am trying to taper off buying DVDs and Blu-rays, Stan. Like you, I use Netflix for stuff I know I’ll only watch once. I’ll probably end up with 100 Blu-rays of my favorite movies.

I liked this when it came out too, saw it in the theater (I did that back in the day). I agree the sequel was bad.

I’d like to see your list of your 100 favorite movies, George. Start working on that, will you, please?

That Best Movies list will take some time to assemble, Rick. But I’ll work on it after I return from Katie’s Graduation in Boston.

The one thing about JEWEL that was outstanding was the theme song, Billy Ocean’s “When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going.” I loved the music video they made.
