Robert Downey, Jr. won a Golden Globe for his performance of Sherlock Holmes. That won’t mollify the purists who think Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett are the only actors who could play the role. Downey, with the aid of Jude Law as the able
Dr. Watson, take on a criminal conspiracy that dabbles in Black Magic and revolution. My only quibble is that the fetching Rachel McAdams doesn’t get enough screen time for my taste. Turning Sherlock Holmes into an action movie does have some downside: the action has to be explained in a data-dump delivered by Downey at the movie’s conclusion. But despite these quibbles, I enjoyed Sherlock Holmes and you probably would, too. GRADE: B
We’re seeing today-it was that or the Aldomovar movie, a longer drive. 43rd anniversary so we are taking the day off.
Congratulations to you and Phil, Patti! If you see SHERLOCK HOLMES, you’ll like it.
Happy Anniversary, Patti.
Don’t you and Jackie have a Special Day coming up, Jeff?
October 24 – #40.
I thought so! Hope you’re planning something really Special! Are you going to NoirCon?
I remain unconvinced, so will wait for it on the small screen.
I’m not trying to convince anybody, Rick. SHERLOCK HOLMES in this incarnation is not “Sherlock Holmes.” It’s an action movie with three really smart actors. I enjoyed it and so will you when the DVD is released in a month or two.
The current plan is London in the Fall, George, but time will tell.
Diane and I aren’t going to Bouchercon in 2010, Jeff. But, NoirCon is a possibility. London sound nice for a 40th Anniversary!
If we do go to London it will probably be around that time, so I don’t think we’ll be going to NoirCon.
But, I guess time will tell.
