SILENT INVASION [Disney+]

Disney+ series based on STAR WARS and MARVEL have mixed reviews. Of course, The Mandalorian was a big hit. I really liked Loki. And WandaVision. I didn’t get excited about Moon Knight.

Secret Invasion is a six-episode series starring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Fury has been working with the Skrulls–an alien race of shapeshifters–but one of the Skrulls has decided to take over the Earth. Part spy thriller, part conspiracy drama, Secret Invasion spends too much time in dark alleys in Moscow and abandoned nuclear sites in Russia.

It’s hard to believe a bearded and aging Nick Fury can handle this massive threat. Kingsley Ben-Adir plays the scary Skrull, Gravik. Gravik has no problem killing people and blowing stuff up.

Olivia Colman is my favorite character. She plays an high-ranking MI6 agent and a friend of Nick Fury, but has her own agenda in protecting the UK’s national security interests. I would dump Jackson and let Olivia Colman run the whole operation. So far, Secret Invasion is a dud. GRADE: C

A case of going to the well once too often? How long can Marvel Studios keep milking the old comics, with the original Avengers cast like Sam Jackson aging out of their roles, the second-tier characters like Moon Knight and Morbius landing with a thud, and the recent Thor and Ant-Man movies under-performing? I suppose they could go the original Marvel route and introduce new Avenger lineups. I bought the first FANTASTIC FOUR comic with the Skrulls (#2, cover date Jan. 1962, but actually on the stands in Oct. 1961) fresh off the rack.

Fred, I bought an original copy of the first FANTASTIC FOUR comic back in 1961, too! Sadly, my mother disposed of my comic book collection when I was away at Summer Camp. Years later I showed her the prices of the comics she threw away. “I could have bought you a new car,” I told her.

If it weren’t for our mothers all of us could be gazillionaires. (In my case, though, it wasn’t my mother; it was my oldest child. I sold all my early Marvels to help pay for Jessie’s birth. Worth it.)

Patti, I’ve admired Olivia Coleman’s work for years. You’re right: she can do anything. But, in doomed productions like SILENT INVASION, they don’t allow Olivia Coleman to do much.

No! I like Samuel L. Jackson but Nick Fury is a white man and I hate the idea that he has to change for PC reasons, or whatever their asinine excuse is! Give me the comics with Steranko art for the real Nick Fury!

Speaking of comics, Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr., just passed away. He was a friend, roommate, collaborator and fellow comic collector (when I was collecting them). RIP.
