Singing in the Rain is one of my favorite movies and this new Blu-ray edition shows the film off to its best effect. Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds star in this 60th-Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition (newly remastered in 2011 4K transfer) of one the best Hollywood musicals. Singing in the Rain is filled with memorable songs, lavish dance routines, and Gene Kelly’s classic song-and-dance number performed in the rain. This DVD should be in everyone’s collection! GRADE: A
At age 2. Donald O’Connor was Kevin’s favorite and he could copy his dancing on the wall routine pretty well. Now his heroes are angry birds-which he is building a village in clay and legos for. I feel like we have lost something.
These things go in cycles, Patti. I loved Donald O’Connor’s dance routines as a kid, too. Later, as a adult, I admire his work even more.
This is a classic. You didn’t mention Jean Hagen but what a job she did. She deservedly got an Oscar nomination for her brilliant performance as the awful Lina Lamont.
Lina Lamont: If we bring a little joy into your humdrum lives, it makes us feel as though our hard work ain’t been in vain for nothin’. Bless you all.
You’re right about Jean Hagen, Jeff. She’s terrific in SINGING IN THE RAIN. This new Blu-ray edition really makes this movie sparkle.
This has been one of my favorite films forever. I once saw it on a double bill with GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935. Felt like I could tap dance my way to heaven that night.
SINGING IN THE RAIN has always been one of my favorites, too, Scott. Hollywood is concentrating on Big Budge action movies, but I’m convinced there’s an audience for movies with singing and dancing in them.
Year ago my mom and I were watching an episode of The Andy Griffith Show, the one were a woman from the big city gets pulled over for speeding and ends up in the Mayberry jail. (Complications ensue.) My mom said remarked that she knew the actress. Turns out that Jean (Ver)Hagen was an old friend of our family. When my mom was a little girl she met her, and was happy to report that Ms. Hagen was a very nice woman.
Great story, Drongo! I’ve always been a fan of Jean Hagen.
