SONY BRAVIA HDTV (KDL-46EX701) & SONY BLU-RAY PLAYER (BDP-S360)

Diane and I finally took the plunge into HDTV by purchasing a Sony Bravia and a Sony Blu-ray player. But, of course, nothing comes easy. When Diane and I tried hooking up the equipment ourselves, we couldn’t access HD channels. Two phone calls to TIME-WARNER Tech Support were useless, so out to our house came a TIME-WARNER service technician. “Wow, your cable is 20 years old!” he said. Then, for the next three hours, Dave (the Cable Guy) recabled our entire house by ripping out the old cable and installing new super-duper cable. Now we have crisp, clear high-definition TV and you should too! If you haven’t taken the plunge, now is the time to do it. By upgrading to high-def with TIME-WARNER, Diane and I were given a FREE year of SHOWTIME! Nice.

Way to go, George! Nice economy stimulus.

We did the same thing, only with a much smaller TV as we had to pit it into the living room. But that HD picture is way better, especially on live events.

And we got the free Showtime. NURSE JACKIE starts on Monday.

I was for holding out a little longer until the HDTVs were 3-D capable, Jeff. But Diane decided this was the time to go HD so we did. The cost was reasonable: the Bravia cost us $1499 at BJ’s WAREHOUSE and the Sony Blu-ray player cost $149 at BEST BUY. Plus, I had some REWARD ZONE coupons so that brought the price down even lower. Once you get used to HD, you can’t go back!

We have a HD tv but no blue ray. I guess for $149 we should do it, but we don’t rent that many movies. Mostly go out or watch them ON DEMAND. Let me know if Nurse Jackie improves this year.

Once you get used to Blu-ray high-def, Patti, it’s hard to watch a regular DVD. And the prices of the Blu-ray players have come way down.

Yes, your nagging finally moved Diane to action, Art. I was still holding out for HDTV 3-D, but that will have to come in our next set. Hockey looks great in HD! And, now with the expanded HD package with TIME-WARNER, we have your beloved GOLF CHANNEL, too!

I have searched the Sony site to no avail, George. They say that model does not exist. So… what size is it? It’s an LCD, yes? Is it a 2009 or a 2010 model? Inquiring minds and all that.

Meanwhile I’m stuck in my usual conservatism: the old Sony analog 36 inch TV works just fine, the picture looks good to our eyes, and I hate to replace what’s not broken. So this setup, and it’s just what I would have gotten, if it’s 52 inch, will just have to wait. The other problem I have here is a large piece of furniture which houses the TV. A big wide-screen HD unit won’t fit. The unit holds all the stereo equipment, nicely flanked by my NHT speakers. There’s no place to put this very nice arts-and-crafts piece, not event he garage. So I guess I have to stay behind in the 20th century.

BTW, my Saturday Soundtrack is up.

The SONY 46″ EX701 is a 2010 model, Rick, with WiFi capability (that’s why it’s an upgrade over the EX-700). It has an LCD/ LED technology which gives it a brighter, sharper picture than an ordinary LCD. Our old Toshiba 36″ works great, too. But I’m giving it away to a student this weekend. I’m totally in the HD camp now.

It’s not a 46″ TV but Jackie did her bit to stimulate the economy today too; she bought an exercise bike.

I suspected the 46 in the model number was the (diagonal) screen size, but wanted to make sure. It would be the 52 for us, I think, if the day ever comes when this one dies.

The bigger the screen, the more you will pay, Rick. There was a several hundred dollar difference between a 46″ and a 50″.

My wife is a big believer in “Out with the Old, in with the New,” Drongo. Plus, this is a really nice student. He even offered to pay me for the TV, but I told him to invest his money.

Yes, BJ’s WAREHOUSE discounts its electronics significantly, Jeff. But they don’t carry everything. We were lucky they had the Sony Bravia we wanted. When we checked Sam’s Club, they were out of ALL their 46″ HDTVs!

Jackie needs the bicycle rather than the treadmill as she has knee problems (as you remember) and riding the bike a couple of times for 15-20 minutes seems to really help.

If there is an aquatic fitness center near you, Jackie should try the pool, Jeff. I try to go to the pool every day and it really makes a difference to my knees. Just frolicking in the water helps!
