SOULSVILLE By Huey Lewis & The News

Huey Lewis & The News picked some of the more obscure songs from the STAX RECORDS vault and the result is this cover CD. Plenty of brass, great backup singers, and Huey Lewis & The News sounding better than they have in years. If you love soul music, you’re going to want this album: 14 songs that bring back the Sixties. The most recognizable song is “Respect Yourself,” the old Staple Singers hit. My favorite song is “Just One More Day,” the Otis Redding hit. I love this music so I’m obviously giving this CD: GRADE: A

I’m glad they went with some of the lesser-known soul hits. There are so many covers of classics like “Soul Man,” where the originals are so familiar, the question becomes “What’s the point of a remake?”

And I love, love, love that cover!

You’re going to love, love, love this CD, Deb. I can’t think of another group that can capture the STAX sound like Huey Lewis and The News.

Wilson Pickett did “Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool You” – I do know that one.

Sounds like one I’ll have to order. I saw a pretty good documentary about the whole Memphis/Stax-Volt studio history (sadly, it turned into a black vs. white thing at the end after it had been the most integrated music company ever) with great footage of Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Steve Cropper, etc.

Look out for it. It’s called Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story and was on PBS.
