Spectre kicks off with the patented James Bond chase scene. Loved it. What I didn’t love was Bond getting holes drilled into his head (with no obvious ill effects) and a weak ending. In between the cool chase scene and the lame ending, Spectre follows the Bond template: Bond finds trouble and explosions result. This is the 50th Anniversary of the first Bond movie. But at 2 hours and 28 minutes, Spectre is a tad long. When Bond “borrows” the Aston Martin DB 10 (that’s the car Daniel Craig is leaning against in the photo above) you expect some wild special effects. But not so much happens. Disappointing. So despite these quibbles, I liked Spectre. I just didn’t like it a lot. GRADE: B
Well I just think it’s wonderful that a man your age still goes out to see James Bond movies!
Dan, I’ve been a James Bond fan since I saw GOLDFINGER eons ago. The Regal theater was completely sold out for SPECTRE.
Sounds about the same as the review. Jackie still wants to see it. I’ve never warmed up to Craig as Bond.
Jeff, I don’t have a problem with Daniel Craig as Bond. But, you’re right: he doesn’t have the style of a Connery or Brosnan.
I’m glad I’m not the only person who doesn’t care for Craig as Bond. I think Connery and Brosnan were my fav’s, with roger moore not far behind.
I’ll wait for it on netflix
Maggie, I agree with your Bond rankings. I think Roger Moore is an underrate Bond.
I want to see it. Maybe I should wait for it to show on cable.
Bill, I’m sure SPECTRE will be on Netflix in a few months.
George, I’m waiting to see SPECTRE in the theatre mainly because I like Craig as James Bond. I recently watched Daniel Craig, Naomie Harris, and Christoph Waltz on “The Graham Norton Show.” I found Craig quite unassuming and pretty down to earth. He referred to his star status post-007 and how difficult it was to go anywhere without being recognised. He said something to the effect that he was trying hard not to let it go to his head.
Lucky you, to watch the Graham Norton show. It’s one of my favorite shows, and we’re not getting the new season, just reruns of last season.
Maggie, we get to see the show on cable in India long after it is beamed in the West, and especially UK. I watched it on YouTube! I like the show too, particularly where Norton’s guests are witty.
Maggie, you might be able to get THE GRAHAM NORTON SHOW on the Internet if you look around.
Prashant, Daniel Craig has also said SPECTRE will be his last Bond film. But I hope he changes his mind.
I appreciate your fine review. I can now save my movie-ticket money for something else (any recommendations?), and I’ll get my Bond fix via the Sean Connery versions. After all, no one has been better. All the best from R.T. at http://thesimpleartofmurder.blogspot.com/
R.T., Patti Abbott really likes ROOM.
I’m with the group who don’t like Craig as Bond, though that’s based on his looks, and the trailers, as I haven’t seen any of the films with him. George, there weren’t many explosions or special effects in the early Bond films, I guess you’ve come to expect that from the later ones.
Connery as Bond was something special – and the idea of an agent like 007 was new – since then it’s been a road downhill imho.
Anyway I find most of these films so predictable and boring in a way – can’t even watch them on tv.
Wolf, the Bond movies now have a template that doesn’t vary much. There was nothing unpredictable in SPECTRE. The producers need to plant some surprises in the next Bond film.
George, thanks for confirming this!
A bit OT:
Here in Hungary we now have almost as many tv channels as in the USA and of course they need stuff to show – so you see almost unbelievable crap, especially B movies (or should that be C, D, …) from the USA regularly – and of course the old stuff is recycled, Harry Potter or Steven Seagall every month or so.
Wolf, even with a 1000 channels, sometimes there’s just nothing good on when I’m watching.
George I’m loving my DVR I really hate commercials (nearly 1/3 of the shows are commercials over if you count recaps and what’s up next) so the DVR is a blessing. I can only tape a week ahead, and am now trying to reduce what’s on there now, not helped by reruns of Evening Shade and Spin City (with M J Fox, not charlie sheen) Earlier I watched all the Murphy Brown’s and finally saw the Magnum PI with the Gilbert & Sullivan show (I had remembered it incorrectly, thinking that Magnum, TJ and Rick were the 3 little maids) If you have access to Ant (Antenna TV) and Laff and maybe metv you might find some old sitcoms. They had one I didn’t remember: It’s about time, with astronauts stranded in prehistoric times Frank Aletter was one of the astronauts
Maggie, we routinely DVR most TV programs. Like you, the endless commercials need to be avoided!
If anyone is collecting Bond movies Target today (9th) only has Dr No, Goldfinger and the 3 Craig movies for $6 each when I first looked, but when I went to double check they were $11-15 maybe it’s operator error
Maggie, I’m tempted to buy the Bond Blu-ray “suitcase.” If AMAZON offers it at an irresistible price, I’m ordering it!
It certainly had some weaknesses, but it was still Craig playing Bond, which I love. I actually enjoyed it the second time I saw it better than the first. I saw things I hadn’t noticed the first time and made me feel better about the ending. It is my least favorite of the 4, but if Craig does stick with his plan to not return, it is a nice bookend to what are, in my opinion, the best group of Bond films.
Carl, Daniel Craig’s contract says he’s obligated to do one more Bond film.
That would be great if it happened. I certainly enjoy him in the role and would like to see him continue. I’m not looking forward to the change-over, regardless of who they get to play the role.
Carl, I’m with you on Daniel Craig. I hope he changes his mind (maybe more money will help!) and makes one more Bond.
