STAR TREK PICARD (CBS All Access)

I watched the original Star Trek as a kid. And, I also watched Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek Enterprise, and the Star Trek movies. Diane and I are just starting Star Trek Discovery (also on CBS All Access). But the new series, Star Trek Picard, excites us most. We have always liked Patrick Stewart as starship captain Jean-Luc Picard.

This series so far–just two of the 10 episodes–sets up a scenario where Star Fleet has been infiltrated by a menacing conspiracy that seems so far obsessed with destroying any “synthetic” (aka, android) life forms. At this point, Picard doesn’t have a ship or a crew, but I’m sure things will get moving in tonight’s third episode. This new Star Trek series brings back several actors from previous Star Trek series to reprise their roles, including Brent Spiner (Data), Jeri Ryan (Seven-of-Nine), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi), and Jonathan Frakes (Riker). Are you a Star Trek fan? Are you interested in Star Trek Picard? GRADE: INCOMPLETE

Watched the original series and most of the movies but that’s about it. Would I watch this. Maybe. Except I’m not paying for another streaming service at this moment. I have cable, Amazon Prime and Netflix. That’s about all my wallet can afford.

George, though I have watched the original Star Trek series, I have been meaning to watch the entire franchise from the beginning. Ditto with Star Wars. It will probably take me a few months to get through it all.

I’m with Steve. If it was on a service I had I would definitely watch it, being a big Picard fan. But would I get CBS All Access for this – or anything else? No chance.

Jeff, the multiplying of streaming services is annoying…and expensive. I’m sure Star Trek PICARD will be available on Blu-ray and DVD eventually.

Jeff, with Star Trek you never really know whether someone is dead or not. Picard claims Data died saving Mars (and Picard) from a terrorist strike. We see Data as “young” (obviously that anti-aging photography trick) and “old” in flashbacks.

I don’t remember the original STAR TREK myself, but my grandparents watched it when they were kids, and now that I’m retired I intend to check it out.

Dan, the BBC just signed a deal to broadcast DEEP SPACE NINE. Friends of my mine who are ardent Star Trek fans, insist DEEP SPACE NIGHT is the best series in Star Trek. I’m dubious.

In addition to cable, which gets me all the usual stuff plus HBO and Showtime, I also have Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Do I even come close to watching enough stuff to justify all this? Not a chance. Will I get rid of some of it? Probably not. I was a fan of the original Star Trek, but that’s where it ended for me.

Michael, Francises like Star Trek, Star Wars, the Bond movies, etc. are huge money-makers. Bringing Picard out of retirement seems like a reach to me, but the audience seems to like it. A second season of STAR TREKT PICARD has already been approved.

I only watched the original star trek. Right now I don’t have any streaming service. I had Netflix streaming for a while but was frustrated in the slim selection of movies, and had trouble fast forwarding (the most used button on my remote). I only was able to use that as my cable co. (Cox) offered it. I stopped the Netflix disc service when I went to Bouchercon and haven’t started it up again. I was frustrated with that on how long it took to get a new release – sometimes over a month. I’ll probably start it up in May as after LCC is here in March I’ll be going to Savannah and Charleston for a week.

I’ve not really ever “needed” to see the new star trek shows. I have seen Stewart on talk shows, and love him so would probably like the series, but too many other shows.

BTW The Miss Fisher movie will be streaming on Acorn on March 23rd Not sure if that is the only date, so double check with Acorn

I have to admit that I didn’t watch much of “Raumschiff Enterprise” (that was the German title of Star Trek) for two reasons:
I found it too simplistic – and it appeared on German TV only in 1972 when I was already working hard as a consultant in IT.
And later too I just didn’t feel connected – maybe because it wasn’t one person’s work but a construct of many people, not always logical, too commercial …
The same goes for the movies – the only one I watched and liked was The Voyage Home – it seemed human to me …

Wolf, STAR TREK has a huge fan base. Like you, I think many of the plots are simplistic. But, sometimes, the writing soared way above the average genre TV show.

No more streaming services, especially one as limited at this. I would certainly watch it on one I had though.

I have no streaming services, and don’t feel I’ve missed anything. Ditto for premium cable channels. But if content continues to migrate to pay channels I may finally revert to what I thought would be my retirement model. Drop tv altogether, listen to music and read all day. If Big Bang hadn’t closed up shop last year, they could have worked up a great cross-promotion episode with a Stewart cameo.

Art, a number of people at the Aquatic Center have dropped TV altogether. Granted, they are older than you and I, but the costs of streaming services continue to rise, going Cold Turkey becomes a definite option.
