Bernard Cornwell’s The Empty Throne continues the story of Uhtred, a warrior, in the history of the forming of England. It’s the 10th Century and political forces are unleashed when the King dies. Uhtred has to battle against his enemies who want to destroy the unity he has fought so hard to build. The Empty Throne is the 8th book in the Warrior Chronicles series, but it stands alone. If you’re in the mood for a book of battle and politics, The Empty Throne blends both into a satisfying mix. GRADE: B+
Man, this guy writes a lot of books. Didn’t you also read his Sharpe series? Looks like there are a couple of dozen of those.
Jeff, I’ve read a couple dozen Bernard Cornwell books. I’ve enjoyed all of them. But you have to be in the mood for battle!
My problem with these, and the majority of such faux historical / historical fantasy type books (Game of Thrones, etc.), is that the politics outweigh the rest of the plot by far. I get way too much politics in the daily news without wanting to wade through made-up politics in my enjoyment reading. And Jeff is right, seems he writes a lot of books.
Rick, Bernard Cornwell is prolific, but his quality control is good. You can’t go wrong with any of his books. Cornwell’s SHARPE series concentrates more on warfare than politics.
What Rick said. I too tire of the politics but Phil might like this one.
Patti, Phil would enjoy any of the Bernard Cornwell historical novels.
Not really me genre of choice though I I keep hearing great things about Cornwell – thanks George.
Sergio, Bernard Cornwell is prolific, but he keeps the quality of his historical fiction high. I’ve enjoyed his SHARPE series and this WARRIOR series. Cornwell specializes in battle tactics.
