Diane, Patrick, Katie, and I saw Girl From the North Country back in June 2022 on Broadway (you can read all about it here). The touring company of Girl From the North Country arrived in Buffalo just before the Western NY shut down after Lake Effect snow bands dumped several feet of snow on the area. Only one performance was cancelled last week, but many ticket-holders exchanged their tickets for the Better Weather performances on the weekend.
Conor McPherson creates a grim setting for this musical. The musical is set in Duluth, Minnesota in 1934. It’s winter and a band of desperate people stay at a boarding house on its last legs. Everyone has problems, everyone seems doomed. Music seems to be the only thing that can raise their spirits.
If you’re a fan of Bob Dylan songs, you’l enjoy the variety of his songs that are included in this musical. The songs span most of Dylan’s career. There’s a mix of familiar and not-so-familiar Dylan songs in this musical. The cast of this touring company was outstanding! GRADE: A
MUSICAL NUMBERS:
I’ve been a big Dylan fan for more than 60 Years, starting when I began as a student.
I widh there wre more of is earlier songs here, they kind of changed our lives.
Wolf, GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY includes plenty of great Dylan songs. The cast of good singers made the musical a delight!
Given how much I often prefer Dylan songs when performed by others, I might even like this musical if somehow I find a video performance or a local troupe staging…
Todd, GIRL FROM THE NORHT COUNTRY touring company might show up in your neighborhood later in 2024.
It would be fun to see a musical with so many familiar and good songs. So many of them now have mediocre music. Glad you liked it.
Patti, the grim setting–1934 and the Great Depression–only highlights Dylan’s powerful lyrics.
Like you, we saw GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY on Broadway. The biggest name in the cast was Mare Winningham, who also sang – who knew she could sing? – two of the most familiar songs, “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Forever Young.” Like the production of SWEENEY TODD with Patti Lupone, several of the actors also played old-timey instruments in the show. We liked it a lot.
Jeff, I liked the woman who played the drums on stage. That was unexpected.
First post didn’t go through.
I know all the songs here and unlike Todd I prefer Dylan singinging Dylan. I wonder how Like a Rolling Stone would fit in here.
Steve, “Like a Rolling Stone” shows up in the first Act when events turn dire. I like listening to the early Dylan. Dylan in the 1990s until now…not so much.
Dylan did several very good albums in the early 2000’s. Time Out of Mind, Modern Times, Love and Theft, Together Through Life.
Steve, I really like Dylan’s version of “It’s Not Dark Yet” from TIME OUT OF MIND.
