A few days ago I reviewed The War on Music: Reclaiming the-Twentieth-Century By John Mauler and Ennio Morricone’s name was mentioned a few times in your comments. Just through serendipity I stumbled onto this performance of “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” theme by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. It really rocks! And, check out that dangling guy!
Was there ever a cooler piece in the history of film music? i think not.
Jerry, the theme song to THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY never gets old to me! Classic!
Still gonna say, the key setpieces (and totality) of FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE better yet. The whole soundtrack was up on YT a while back, but this is the best we can do at the moment, I think: https://youtu.be/NrNyE4tD-BE
Todd, thanks for the link!
Very good! For many years, I thought the singers were singing, “Don’t want no grapefruit.” It still sounds like that to me, lol.
Deb, I admire Ennio Morricone nonsense lyrics because they generate speculations like “Don’t want no grapefruit.” “Louie, Louie” by the Kingsmen did the same thing!
I think you have to make a distinction between Morricone’s apparent vocalise syllables, which aren’t actually words AFAIK, and the Kingsmen muttering and slurring the actual lyrics to “Louie, Louie”…
Todd, the effect in both songs were the same…except the FBI investigated “Louie Louie” for hidden meanings.
Yes. Hoover pretty insane. The singers sound as if they are saying “We can fight!” at a spot in FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE. Bu there’s a tradition of music-for-music’s-sake vocalise/syllables which aren’t words in opera and art song, which Morricone was well aware of. While the Kingmen, if not drunk, ere having some fun or honestly didn’t know the creole lyrics of “Louie, Louie”:
Louie, Louie, me gotta go
Louie, Louie, me gotta go
Fine little girl she waits for me
Me catch the ship for cross the sea
I sail the ship all alone
I never think me make it home
Louie, Louie, oh, me gotta go
Louie, Louie, me gotta go
Three nights and days me sail the sea
Me think of girl constantly
On the ship I dream she there
I smell the rose in her hair
Louie, Louie, me gotta go
Louie, Louie, me gotta go
Me see Jamaica moon above
It won’t be long, me see my love
Me take her in my arms and then
I tell her I never leave again
Louie, Louie, oh, me gotta go
Louie, Louie, me gotta go
I say, me gotta go
I say, me gotta go
Todd, lyrics aside, the FBI seemed convinced “Louie Louie” contained secret messages. Yes, Hoover was wacky.
Can you earn a living as a whistler?
Patti, apparently the Danish National Symphony Orchestra hired that woman to whistle…but not in the way Lauren Bacall suggested.
Part of the skill set. Certain compositions require it.
Wha Wha Wha – yes, indeed, very cool.
Jeff, I thought the dangling man was a nice touch.
